About
The 11 Art Stations along Line 1 of the underground in Naples, managed by ANM, are the result of a project by the municipal administration in Naples. They are one of the most interesting examples of decentralized museum spread over the urban area: more than 150 site-specific works of art by 80 protagonists of contemporary art have been placed inside and outside the stations. Metro Art ANM’s educational service promotes this rich heritage of art and architecture: guided tours, school activities, workshops for children, private tours.

- Tom&NikkiTravelLondon, United Kingdom1,901 contributionsImpressive mosaics! Not your average train station! We came through this station on many occasions whilst in Naples. As you come down the second set of escalators there are some pretty impressive blue mosaics on the ceiling and going right up into the roof. In the afternoon it’s lit up and you can get some good photos. The station is well located coming out you are near plenty of shops and cafesVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 16, 2024
- luis iMontrouge, France310 contributionsShe deserves her reputationThe station is indeed very beautiful and clean. Also quite deep (like in London for example) The surrounding areas are less clean, avoid hawkers of tickets, a one-way ticket costs €1.50 either from the outside vending machine or directly at the ticket office.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 11, 2024
- MFaroItaly2,893 contributionsToledoHow to transform even a subway station into an art form: welcome to the Toledo metro. This may be the best synthesis of continuous embellishments in a place where you don't expect to find art and where you go frantically. To visit.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 13, 2024
- MidwestKathMDetroit, Michigan1,127 contributionsLovely and calming way to ride up to the streets! No coincidence that we booked our hotel near the Toledo Metro Station. I had heard about the art and wanted to see it and enjoyed a few times every day as we used the metro. The purple and white mosaic tile ceiling and walls along with lighting bring magic to the escalator ride to the surface! It is lovely to look at while it can bring a calming effect if your day or your travels have been hectic.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 20, 2024
- Benedetto R22 contributionsLarge museum of contemporary art free and widespread on the Neapolitan urban areaAlmost all stations on Line 1 of the Neapolitan metro are embellished with works of contemporary art, by well-known and lesser-known artists. The design of the underground stations was entrusted to internationally renowned architects and designers, such as Àlvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Dominique Perrault, Gae Aulenti, Alessandro Mendini, Massimiliano Fuksas, etc. The internal and external spaces of the stations - each with its own stylistic characteristics and designed according to the different urban areas concerned - host over 250 contemporary art installations, thus constituting a unique example of a free and widespread museum. The most spectacular and photographed by visitors is Toledo Station, designed by Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca, where you can admire the Crater de luz, a large cone that runs deep through all levels of the station, connecting the street level with the lobby that is 40 meters below. Covered with mosaics of a shade of light blue that becomes increasingly intense as you proceed in depth, until you get to a "submerged" blue room. On the walls and pillars you can admire the Olas, waves in relief, also covered with blue mosaics. It is illuminated by LEDs programmed on the blue color gamut, a work, 'Relative light, by Robert Wilson.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 26, 2024
- Catharina50Eindhoven, The Netherlands7,128 contributionsPhotogenic. The underground metro station of the Spanish Quarter, called Toledo, is decorated with beautiful mosaics in special shapes. The colour-changing air shaft is Instagram-worthy. You have to be on the escalator to do that. If you don't have to take the metro, it's worth buying a metro ticket for this.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten November 23, 2024

This is the most "artistic" and "poetic" of the stops, all beautiful, on the Naples metro. The mosaics by William Kentridge are worth the trip, but the large horse outside is also beautiful. Take half an hour to wander around inside: it's an experience

this station which can only be accessed with a metro ticket is one of the most beautiful in Italy, with these colors varying from green to blue. I was enchanted to see the colors changing... it's beautiful and for those who have a ticket I highly recommend stopping to take some photos!!

CNN and the Daily Telegraph have recognized Toledo as the most beautiful metro station in Europe. Toledo, opened in 2012, bypassed Munich's minimalist Westfriedhof and the luxurious (according to CNN pompous) Komsomolskaya in Moscow. Architect Oscar Tusquets and artists William Kentridge and Robert Wilson have developed an unusual design of the deepest (50 m) station in Naples. Or rather, the part of it where the escalator is located. The unusual overflow of light at the top really catches the eye. We were here late in the evening and this is the best option to linger near the escalator and look up. I think it's not safe during the day. However, all the admiration will remain here. It seems that the designers were contracted to do only the lobby. Or they weren't paid. The same photo in all ratings and there are no trains! This is because the platform itself is nothing unusual. There are hundreds of such platforms around the world. Therefore, CNN's rating is controversial. I would recognize Toledo as the most beautiful lobby of the metro station.

We got off a stop early because we had heard that this station was unbelievably beautiful, but I think I missed something…? Don’t get me wrong; it’s pretty, but so many people were taking pictures and videos and I just wasn’t mesmerized…? Again, it’s pretty and you can take some interesting pictures (as dozens of people were), but I’m not sure it’s worth going out of your way to see in person.

We had to take the subway to go to Garibaldi and on the way, we saw her: a bluff. Nothing to do with the publicity photos, we deduced that it was the same for a kind of chimney tiled with the mosaic and through which the light comes nothing special and that we had seen in some images, it is all fotohop. If you don't have to take the metro at Toledo station don't spend the money

Very Cool! There are art everywhere. Be careful my husband got distracted and dizzy looking up at all the art and end up falling the stairs Didn't get hurt was still able to walk after. But all the art can have this dizzy effect in some people.
It is a definitely must to see, if you are taking the train.

The Toledo metro station in Naples is the most beautiful in Europe. An important recognition for the Campania capital. The Toledo station, located in the central via of the same name, is part of the Art Stations project of the metro line 1 of the Neapolitan capital. The project is admired above all for ceilings adorned with mosaics.
It enchants with its spectacular scenography, designed in shades of blue, black and ocher (sea, earth, tuff), with references to the local landscape and architecture, proceeding for different levels of immersion and playing with the luminous refraction .
In short, the Toledo Station is a museum open 24 hours a day.

Artistic and impressive interior with mosaic ceilings and walls. You have to have a ticket to see it, do not miss it if you are using public transport. About being the most beautiful in Europe is a matter of taste. St. Petersburg underground is of a different style, but...

Get off especially at this station followed by great comments. It seemed like just another one of the bunch to me. It simulates the sea because there are walls of venecitas, nothing more. I think it's even dangerous to go, the environment is quite complicated.

Interestingly this was the closest station to our hotel. It was several times that we went in and out. The exit is more spectacular, up the stairs.
Anyway, this tourist attraction is overrated. It is very photogenic and then in reality, not at all, responds to expectations. Moreover, it cannot be considered a paradigm of the rest of the metro stations in Naples. At least, the rest of us that we saw, they seemed very normal.

Is there a particular part of the city where struggling artists sell their art?
Written July 20, 2016
Not that I'm aware of....but contrary to previous answer I have seen in the old part of the city, around Spaccanapoli, tables and makeshift kiosks selling "homemade" art, some better than others. Don't know if I would call them struggling artists....
