In the historical heart of Naples, the three floors of the 19th-century Palazzo Donnaregina host the Madre · Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina: 7.200 m2 of exhibition spaces, with site-specific installations, as well as works from the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The building, whose name comes from the Swabian Monastery of Santa Maria Donnaregina (13th century) was restored and refurbished as a museum to a design by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Veira in 2005. Today it offers to its public, next to the permanent and temporary exhibition paths, a library, a mediatheque, a bookshop/cafeteria.

I was never big on modern art but this place was awesome. It has a cool temporary collection and it's pretty big too. From the outside it is almost impossible to miss because of the big yellow door. It is also quite cool so it's...More

Naples is archeology and MADRE is like a blow of fresh air. Interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions. Easy to visit and with a central peaceful courtyard where you feel you are out of this world.

Though I got a little lost getting there, my perseverance paid off. Enjoyed exploring the various exhibits. I agree with another reviewer who suggested starting on the top floor and working your way down. I almost missed the terrace/roof, a little tricky to find, but...More

Entry Euro 7. No photography allowed. This is a gallery for the dedicated lover of contemporary art - you either love and understand it or you'll leave scratching your head and thinking you could have spent the money better elsewhere. It did make a nice...More

I wish I had known what a great city for contemporary art Naples is before I planned my days there. This, and the subway art, would have topped my list of must sees. Yes, it's challenging. It's not for the casual museum goer. But it's...More

We visited this contemporary art gallery as it was located near our hotel and also was FREE on a Monday, usually it was 7 euros. Despite the waivered charge there were few people inside so it was a pleasure to view the exhibitions in peace....More

The entrance area promises much, once inside it's not too impressive. I do like modern art, but not the extremes. This exhibition is 80% too experimental for me, and the 20% I liked is probably not worth the detour this place requires. And the entrance...More

If you think Damien Hirst has more than a ounce of talent you will probably like this place. But if you are into quality art of Caneletto or Carvaggio, then this place is not for you. Lovely building, welcoming staff and interesting photos.

This was a short walk from the Cavour metro stop and it is in a small built up street, so not visible until you walk past it. Although small from the outside, it is quite a big museum and has some interesting works of art...More
