The Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità is a basilica church located over the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, Naples
We are were staying right opposite, so went in to take a look
The basilica is impressive-the only one in Italy to have thirteen domes
One large central dome, representing Jesus Christ surrounded by twelve smaller representing his disciples
Take a guided tour (9€) and you can see the underground catacombs
The guide tells you all about the basilica and catacombs-it is fascinating
A percentage of the ticket price goes to the local community too (one of the poorest in Naples) to help towards ‘cleaning up the streets’, education and employment

This church is devoted to San Vincenzo Ferreri which here is also known with his nickname of 'o Munacone. The church was build around the years 1602-1613, upon the site of the catacombs of San Gaudioso. These catacombs, may be visited by the tourists. The neighborhood is devout to this church and to the figure of the saint. The tourists that will visit this church, may admire the majestic organ, several paintings of remarkable artistic value like the martyrdom of San Peter from Verona made by Giovanni Balducci and the painting of San Vincenzo Ferrer made by Luca Giordano. Many beautiful marble decorations enrich this place.

This building in a valley is much higher than it appears when viewed from the surrounding areas.
It's a gem of a church with a beautiful interior. Entrance is free.
Under the church, and accessed through it (with an entrance fee), are the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, an experience in themselves.

After admiring the beautiful church we decided to do a tour of the catacombs which luckily starts with a tour of the church. That was so very interesting. The absolutely stunningly beautiful altar and organ must be seen. The lower church and its use and history is also very interesting.

There are lots of art around the church. Also modern works which I found nice.Do not miss the catacombs. They are different from any other I have seen in Rome or Naples. The tour is very informative
I found it sad how the overpass cuts into the monastery behind the church

An amazing church which took my breath away. Had spent a week staying in an apartment accross the piazza looking at this fairly typical church. On the last day we wondered in after several people had asked if we had seen it. Wow what an impact as you walk in with several more surprises as you walk around. Truly spectacular.

This is a gorgeous basilica in a poorer section of the city. This basilica is unusual in that the alter is located above the ground level accessible by stairs on either side. Take the time to wander and look into each corner. To the right, as you enter, in the front is a painting of Jesus sitting on Mary's lap from the 2nd century. Entry is free. If you'd like to visit the catacombs, tickets can be purchased for a guided tour, 8€ for adults and 5€ for children; they are also good for entry into the San Gennaro catacombs. The tour guide was fantastic for the catacombs.

we had an extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic guide. He took us to see the historic catacombs beneath the church. The young man revealed many fascinating areas and described the findings in a very articulate way. It was a truly wonderful experience. The group of people who are responsible for this impressive restoration project should be very proud of their achievements. This is literally a hidden gem and to visit Napoli and miss this would be a shame. A very worthy visit to Sanità - a fascinating and historic area of Napoli. The real deal.

A group performed "Pulcinella" for children from the church. Even though I don't speak or understand Italian I still enjoyed and understood the performance. It was outside under a bridge built by Napoleon's brother-in-law and the lighting was terrific. A friend then gave us a tour of the church and it was beautiful. I like that they use the large areas inside and out for other uses beside worship.
