Naples, city with a lot of heritage.
Naples is a very lively and quite chaotic city, but very easy to visit, with numerous Basilicas, each one more beautiful. It is seen that they are investing money in recovering buildings and there is a lot of life in the streets. At no time did we have a feeling of danger, quite the opposite, since the people are very friendly. Highly recommended to take advantage of the trip to visit the Amalfi Coast and the ruins of Paestum, as well as Pompeii and Herculaneum.

    Built between 1283 and 1324
This church was built between 1283 and 1324. It is location is in a square of the same name bordered by the vibrant Spaccanapoli. Its also home to one of the three spires of Naples: monumental columns built to celebrate the end of the plague. It has as Gothic façade the interior is decorated with intricate gold details, has tall columns and a dramatic altar, and has many paintings and sculptures. Its a beautiful historic church and worth visiting in Naples.

Handsome. Thanks also to the guide Annalisa
Jewel not to be missed. And the guide was exceptional. Annalisa explained everything to us with extraordinary attention and passion. The cell of San Tommaso is also very interesting. He also gave us a very interesting "tip" inviting us to visit the Church of the Gerolimini which had just been restored and reopened to the public. People like this help you enjoy your visit to the city. We took the liberty of recommending greater publicity for the visit and the guide service, with a sacrosanct Neapolitan pride. So as to make human and religious artistic capital more accessible to everyone. If you pass by, look for Annalisa, please!

    A beautiful complex
The church is located on the square of the same name and was commissioned by Charles II of Anjou. Built around the beginning of the 14th century it became the seat of the Dominicans. The church is connected to many famous people such as Thomas Aquinas, Giordano Bruno and Tommaso Campanella. The interior, with three naves, is rich in works of art, in particular the fourteenth-century frescoes of one of the chapels on the right. Recommendation to buy the ticket to access the sacristy and the Treasury. In the sacristy are preserved the arks with the bodies of kings and famous people.

Famous Dominican church in the heart of historical Naples.

You can enter the church itself for free. To see the interesting stuff - Thomas Aquinas’s “bone”, his cell, the coffins of various dignitaries, the burial place of the 1st Bishop of New York (who never got to the Big Apple) , various tatty ancient costs and hats - you have to pay a fair whack - €10. But you do get to visit the crypt and, if you’re lucky, get it all to yourself along with a (disinterested) guide. Overpriced, but I enjoyed the quiet and the history…

We booked this visit for its history. For a small fee, we booked the visit of the museum as well, and of the St-Thomas Acquinus room. The church was nice, and the museum was cool with the sarcophagus. It was very impressive.

But the best was the St-Thomas Acquinas room, where such an important event took place.

With the long tour and visit of the church, you can calculate 1:30 minutes.

We found this at the end of the day sightseeing and so we were quite weary.  However, so pleased we managed to fit this in at the end of the day.  We walked from the University train station which found us in the middle of a large piazza area with lots of lovely restaurants even on a Sunday which was a surprise.

The entrance to the cathedral is actually across the piazza at the left hand corner up a flight of steep steps.

We were surprised as the entrance was quite simple.

However, once we got in the cathedral was quite stunning.  We discreetly had a look around the church and kept quiet to avoid disturbing people who were praying as it was Sunday after all.

Stunning windows which sent prism effects across the church with the sun shining through and also the crystal chandeliers.   Looked stunning with one of the statues of Christ lit up in rainbow colours.  There is a lot of art on display from across several centuries which is very impressive.

Also stayed for a few moments of private prayer which was lovely and peaceful.  The church ask for donations which are so needed especially these days.

Definitely worth a few stops on the train and a 10 minute walk to get here to see this stunning church.

There is also a museum and crypt here, but we ran out of time to see everything.  At least it leaves us something to see next time. Also worth having a look at the gothic spire in the piazza.

We've seen, naturally, some churches here in Naples, but this one is nearly top of the cake. Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore was built during the time of the Angevins (1238 - 1324) and when it was finished 1324, represented one of the largest convent complexes in the city of Napoli. It was royal church of the Angevins, commissioned by the same person as the Duomo di Napoli, i.e. King Charles I of Anjou. Since then, the church survived countless revamps, passing from gothics to baroque and then in 19th century, back to gothics.
When we got inside the church, we've just been stunned with the magnificence and enormous size of a building. High vaults with elegant arches above us, then strong and massive columns with the golden capitels at the tops of them, broad main nave with the rows of wooden, solid benches. We admired at some frescoes made in 14th century in the way of great Giotto, the royal sepulchres,16th century Neapolitan sculptures, high altar and pannelled ceiling, made in Baroque era. Very nice are also, the 24 side chapels, among them, one belonged to the Saint Thomas Aquinas, who studied here in monastery, since it was the original seat of the University of Naples. Beside this role, San Domenico Maggiore served also as the mother church of the Dominicans and as the Aragonese royal church.
Here, within the walls of this basilica, exists moreover the gallery with 45 coffins containing the remains of members of the Aragonese court.
The philosopher friar and heretic, Giordano Bruno also lived here at some point.
Great, Great above all !!

We had walked passed this church a few times the outside being inscribed with music notes, however the doors were always closed, we walked passed once and the doors were open and some sort of service was just finishing and hundreds of people were leaving so we respectfully waited to one side to let them out. Then I was met by pure beauty. We stepped inside to be greeted by the most beautiful awe inspiring sight I have ever seen. As I looked around from one side to another I was moved to tears feeling overwhelmed by the beauty and incredible sight before me. Only twice in my life has this happened, once on the birth of my daughter and the second stepping into this church. Simply magnificent.

We first spied this church when visiting the big square -- Piazza San Domenico Maggiore -- below. After lunch, we climbed 46 steps from the square to an entrance that took us into a 10th-century church around which the 13th-century Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore has been built. It turned out that the main entrance is set in a courtyard on the north side. Gothic at its inception, the huge church now has many Baroque elements, including a lavish paneled ceiling.

This church served the Argonese royal family and holds many of the family tombs. it is also part of a complex that includes a monastery, the original seat of the University of Naples, where Saint Thomas Aquinas studied and eventually returned to teach theology.

Church treasures include frescoes by Pietro Cavalline and 16th-century sculptures. I especially liked a unique painting of Mary Magdalene in which she is depicted with her hair falling to the floor, covering her body like a robe. We spent a long time looking at the 24 beautifully decorated side chapels. All have detailed information about what they contain in Italian and a brief summary in English.

Though the church is free to enter, the crypt requires an admission fee.

If you enjoy visiting incredible churches like we do, make time to visit Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore. We were simply walking along roads our host had suggested enjoying the day and found this by accident. 3 hours later we were so glad we did. Most folks will likely only send an hour, but we simply kept finding amazing things at every corner and spent a good part of our day here.

You go up a curving stairway to emerge next to the altar of a huge Church!
Behind the altar the organ towers.
In the Church some XIVth century frescoes among other treasures.
For a fee a visit of the sacristy reveals tombs of aragonese kings set on a balcony.
To be followed by the cell once occupied by St Thomas d'Aquin.

The guide was absolutely, she apologised for her English but it was absolutely fine and she was so friendly and helpful, she’s a credit to this place.

The ticket is totally worth the price, you get a behind the scenes tour with many fascinating artefacts and history, so glad our hotel recommended this.
