About
Around the origin of our Catacombs much has been discussed, they were simpleburial and never were quarries or underground ways; the first note of the monumentis repeated since the death of St. Agrippino our bishop in the II century, when hisbody was buried there in a noble tomb. Many miracles the saint operated by thetomb, so it became a place of reverence and neapolitan wished to be buried in thatplace.

    Interesting and cool experience
Very cool experience. There is no option to visit these on your own and visits must be done with a guide. They only have groups in Italian and English so hopefully that works out for you. It is a must to book on-line ahead of time, especially since the languages and groups are limited. We recently toured the catacombs in Paris and these are nothing like that at all. Basically, they are cut out of caves on the hillside of what used to be far out of town and now is a lively area on Napoli. Since the caves date back nearly 2,000 years, there is a lot of history to tell. And what a lively and interesting history it is, with so many different periods that greatly affected the site. If you’re looking to see the bones like you do in several other catacombs, then this isn’t for you. They were removed some time ago and when you tour you can hear the story of why. The locals are particularly irritable with the group of people that forced their removal some time ago. The construction is fascinating and so is the stories that go along with the history. Definitely a recommended stop while in Napoli. For those without a car, you can take the metro up to the National Archeological Museum and then hop a bus from in front up to the site. Make sure to download the app and buy tickets in advance, as they do not sell tickets on the buses here.

    Fascinating historical experience
Was a very interesting historical experience! The guides, all of whom were part of an organisation focused on revitalising the neighbourhood surrounding the catacombs, were clearly very passionate about the history of the catacombs, and made the guided tour, something which can feel constrained and boring in other situations, quite exciting. If I came back to Naples with somebody else or was giving recommendations, this would definitely be in the itinerary again. Also appreciated how one ticket gave me access to two catacombs, each with their own guided tour which you can sign up for on the spot. The catacombs themselves were cool, comfortable and nicely lit.

    Well worth a visit
A just the right length tour of these Catacombs. Really enthusiastic guide, genuinely interesting tour and some memorable sights. Nice and cool down there which was a bonus in July. Ticket automatically allows you a visit to the nearby San Gaudioso catacombs too so it's a great deal.

    Enjoyable tour
Excellent tour led by Eduardo. The catacombs offer may examples of beautiful frescos and mosaics. Well-lit, they offer an excellent opportunity to really see the beauty of this ancient art.

    Informative and Cool
This tour was informative, historical (guide said he was a history teacher) and a great way to get out of the heat in Naples. The tour takes about an hour and you learn a lot about the time period these were created and some of whom were at one time buried there. The information about how the tourism brought in by the tours has shaped the neighborhood for the better was really important to hear as well. The only thing that tourists may want to know is that even though the ticket allows you to visit another catacomb (about 15 minutes away walking), you have to do this one first. We tried going to the other first, and we were told that information. There was no information about the order in emails or on the website. It’s something I wish we knew because we would have planned our day differently. Otherwise, it was good.

    Well worth visiting fascinating catacombs
Really interesting visit to catacombs. Guide spoke good English and knew a lot about the history of the place. Fascinating. Also, at the end we learned about the positive impact of this trip on the area we were visiting. Ticket here, gives you free entry to another catacombs down the road which is very different and also worth a visit.

    Well worth a visit
Fantastic place, although a little hard to fine. Napoleon built a bridge right over the neighbourhood and it was forgotten about as everyone just went over the bridge so turn off the main road and go steeply downhill and its at the bottom. The bridge cuts through the old cloisters of the church. The tour was very interesting and the underground part wasn't claustrophobic as the space down there is quite large. My kids are 7 and 9 and found it really interesting and weren't scared. There aren't any skeletons down there, they have all been removed. The church itself is beautiful, so light and airy ans incredible alter. This is run as a social enterprise giving back to the local community. Tickets give you entrance into the other catacombs as well.

Very interesting tour and excellent tour guide
First of all, it was a very historically interesting tour, the catacombs were well preserved. But best part of it was the tour guide Emmanuel, who was very inspirational guide, and very knowledgeable about the history of the various areas. Also the final story of the change of the neighborhood for last 20 years was a huge impact to us.

    Excelent tour, worth a visit
Catacombs were the best experience in Neaples. Very interesting tour. Young people working there are very friendly and take good care of the place. Guide spoke very good English, knew a lot of the place. It is only posible to go there with a guide, which is great. With the ticket you can enter the other catacombs di san Gaudioso, for free, it is also a must see. It is fascinating how those young people started with a project, showed the world such important history and helped their neighbourhood. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

We had a wonderful experience here! Raffaella was a lovely, knowledgeable tour guide. It was clear that she is very passionate about Italian history and genuinely enjoyed sharing this information with the group. Highly recommend making a stop here to learn more about the interesting history of Napoli - the cool underground catacombes are also a nice break from the intense heat :)

We booked a tour in English the day before and turned up ahead of time. Our guide gave us a very good explanation of the three different areas of the catacombs and gave us ample time for photos. The tour took about an hour and was good value for money at €9 each.

I did not realize before attending this tour that the restoration of Naples' catacombs is fairly recent, begun by a group of friends passionate about preserving the city's history. My guide was Isabella, one of these friends, and she was wonderful. Her English was fantastic and she was open and knowledgeable about any questions we had. If you plan to also tour the nearby Catacombs of San Gaudioso. do that one first as the tour is shorter and you can then walk over to San Gennaro for the next hour's tour. If you do San Gennaro first, as I did, you will have just missed the next tour at San Gaudioso. Both sites are covered under one ticket. If you only have time for one, San Gennaro is better.

Although there are no bones here, it is fascinating to see and learn about the ancient burial customs. Some of the crypts and tunnels have well-preserved frescoes.

It is definitely a bit chilly underground so bring a jacket.

Great way to spend a rainy afternoon! Our guide gave a very detailed tour explaining the locals passion for Naples patron Saint and the historical events of the city. The catacombs are more extensive than we imagined and the ticket gives you entrance to other sites which we unfortunately did not have time to do. Well worth the time and money.

I bought these tickets online and you just exchange them at the desk. We were broken up into groups as there were a quite a number of us. Despite us being a large group our lovely guide took his time was very very informative. Explaining absolutely everything of the symbolism and the history. It wasn’t rushed at all. There was plenty of time to ask questions and take photos.

I really enjoyed the tour and would definitely join the second tour which is offered as part of your ticket to be used within a year of validation of the purchased ticket.

The guides of these tours are a social initiative. They are a group of locals that care and have worked very hard to build up the group and preserve these catacombs. Which they are doing very well indeed.

If you enjoy them the way I did, show your appreciation with a small gesture or tip at the end.

Well done 👏 I highly recommend.

My wife, little sons (2 months and 4 years old) and I joined the guided tour in the "Catacombe di San Gennaro". Our guide Eduardo did really an amazing job. His tour was both entertaining and informative. In total the tour takes about 1,5 hours and you'll get a lot of information on the catacombs and the history of Naples. Furthermore, the ticket allows you to participate in a guided tour in the "Catacombe di San Gaudioso", too.
For us the tour was really fabulous and also one of the highlights of our Naples trip. Therefore we could definitely recommend the "Catacombe di San Gennaro" to everybody who visits Naples.

You start off in a Gift shop.

Our tour started within ten minutes of arriving we chose the English Option.

I did not like one of the tour guides at the front desk, I felt as if he was making jokes about myself and partner in another language to his colleage that seemed a bit off, before resuming his role/duties and acting friendly again in English. It came across as RUDE and inturrupting.

They also inform you for your ticket you can also enter a second catacombes within the city for FREE after this visit, and will guide you on how to get there at the end of this tour.

Upon starting our tour, you are finding yourself in a very large underground room with carved out coffin shapes within the walls all around you, everywhere you look.

And The more you look the more you see.

What I find persoanlly interesting was the story of St Gennaro, and St John both bishops of Naples, told by our tour guide.

I also found some of the artwork around the graves were going back during the paganism times before christianity, to early christianity to later christianity... you can really see a differance within the 600 years this catacombe was used.

You can also see whom was wealthy and not, based on the size of their plots.

Deffinelty worth the tour and a history lesson and a very interesting story of St Gennaro and St John who's graves are still there to this Day.

Wheel chair accesable however there are steps.
Toilets and other facilities are location at the entrance of the gift shop where you pay for your ticket.

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are underground paleo-Christian burial and worship sites in Naples, Italy, carved out of tuff, a porous stone. They are situated in the northern part of the city, on the slope leading up to Capodimonte, consisting of two levels, San Gennaro Superiore, and San Gennaro Inferiore. The catacombs lie under the Rione Sanità neighborhood of Naples, sometimes called the "Valley of the Dead". The site is now easily identified by the large church of Madre del Buon Consiglio.
