About
Enchanting scenery that unfolds to the eyes of visitors, a secret place full of history and magic atmosphere. An emotional journey that conducts visitors in the new section of the underground of Naples. It is situated in Vico del Grottone 4, from to 150 mt. to Plebiscito Square. Until a few years ago it wasa veterinary laboratory, now is the entrance of the Bourbon Tunnel. A staircase with 8 ramps, 33 yards deep descending into the belly of Chiaia. The second entry is in Via Domenico Morelli,40, through the crosswalk of “Quick parking”.The Tunnel was built in 1853 by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who, concerned about the outbreak of rebellion, he asked for an escape from the Royal Palace to the barrack in Via della Pace, now Via Morelli. The work was uncompleted and, during the second World War, was used by residents of the area as a military hospital, later becoming the Hall Judicial Deposit. The war left its mark even in the subsoil. That’s way there are handwrite, folding beds, messages of wish and desolation of those who lived it and still maintains its memory. Along the tunnel thereare also the evidences, 530 meters, where visitors can discover the history of real life. Through the spacious streets, it’s easy reachable the network of tunnels and cisterns of seventeenth-century,large buildings, where worked the "pozzari", the only connoisseur of Naples underground. The show is stunning, but that's not finished. On Via Morelli appear statues dating back to fascist period and many cars and motorcycles, abandoned for years, freed from piles of rubbish, arranged and illuminated ad hoc for the route.Nothing is left to chance, even lighting, perfectly integrated with the path of the visitors.Since today everything is possible to visit. Five years ago the scenery was completely different.Rubbish, degradation, wastes of all kinds covered the reliquaries.

- Thomas GDublin, Ireland20 contributionsGreat experience for the whole familyEducational and informative guided tour with Sabrina, our English tour guide. Learned a lot about the history of Naples and life down there during the wars. The underground tunnels are a must in Naples. My whole family had a fantastic time visiting the place. - Julia m4 contributionsAmazing experienceThis was an amazing experience. Victoria was our tour guide and she gave us so much information from all of the WWII info to the aqueduct information. It really feels like you are going back in time the entire tour. You will feel both emotional and amazed as you go through each area. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Napoli.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 24, 2023
- Kerry CChertsey, United Kingdom51 contributionsGreat history tour, just needs to slow down a littleWe loved this tour. Firstly, be prepared for a lot of steep steps down to the underground tunnels, but once you are there it's a fascinating journey through time. Our guide clearly had a passion for the history that she was telling us, she was open to questions, and she had a very thorough knowledge of the tunnels. The reason for a 4 rating rather than a 5 is twofold. Firstly, we arrived a little early at the entrance at Via del Grottone for the last tour of the day. The lady on reception was not overly welcoming. I have a heart condition and cannot stand for long. At the entrance, there were two high stools near the reception desk, and several folded plastic chairs at the little room adjacent to that. My husband opened a couple of the chairs so we could sit when we were told rather rudely that those chairs were for staff only and we needed to be outside until the tour started. We didn't see any other members of staff until the tour started so I don't see why there was a problem, and had some staff arrived, we would have vacated. So instead I had to sit on someone's doorstep. Secondly, during the tour, there are spots when you want to take photographs and as we were a large group, this can take a little time. However, as other tours are going on at the same time but travelling in the opposite direction,.we were hurried on a number of times at the places where people wanted to take photos. Guides from the other tours were telling us that we needed to move on and hurry up. This slightly spoilt it for us, and personally I think the tours should be 15 minutes longer to ensure that those who want to take photos have the opportunity to.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 3, 2023

The size and magnitude of the excavation needs to be seen in person. The old cars and Vespas left behind are photographical bonus.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 8, 2023
- Lynn Trepel CaglarIstanbul, Türkiye2 contributionsExceptional tour , not to be missedThis is a must tour for anyone going to Naples ! Our guide David ( Davide) spoke excellent English and opened up our minds to the Naples world of WW2, how people with the worst conditions survived in these tunnels and how their were many dangerous intrigues between royalties and Ferdinand II. I have been to the Pompei tour ( half of the ruins are in the archeology museum) . I found this tour to be better mainly because Davide was an exceptional guide and it was not only a historical tour from 1853 until the 1960’s but also an emotional tour about civilization . I took this tour on Oct 31, 2023.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 2, 2023

And the place - just fantastic. A must see. Also, for photographers, the tour wasn’t rushed and gave me enough time to take shots of everything.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 6, 2023

At first you go down under the surface with the guide that introduces you to the completely unknown world. The gallery goes back to the 16th century (the Borbon dynasty made it built for defency reasons) and it wasn't used for centuries. It was reopen only in 2005, after 35 years (!) of works to throw away tons of garbage that was inside! Some inhabitants of Naples found a refuge there during the WW2 American bombings and the volunteers reconstructed the way the populations lived there during the war. Very impressing and very interesting! Our guide Stefania is mostly recommended.

My wife and I booked the standard tour starting from Vico del Grottone on a Friday and happened to get a private tour as they didn't have any other visitors on the English tour. The guide spoke English very well and shared many interesting and emotional stories about the tunnels. She was also very open to answer any additional questions. The stories included details from the time when it was built, from when it was used to protect people during world war II as well as after the war when it was used by homeless people and as a parking lot. We can highly recommend this tour.

I really enjoyed this tour. The guide had plenty of information about the caves and the history as to how it got the way it is. In the current COVID pandemic, the tour may have been reduced to accommodate the restrictions. Despite this, the tour was excellent and I would highly recommend.

Reasonable price for the amount of information you get. An hour long your underground Naples. We started off the piazza plebistco which involved a lot of steps down but then we existed at ground level. A unique attraction that I've never seen anywhere else, a must for a trip to Naples

Fascinating visit to this tunnel which has seen so many uses over hundreds of years, from an escape route for bourbon kings to air raid shelter during WW2. Very moving, and beautifully explained by our guide. Visits also available in English

Hi, I'd like to book tickets online but I'm also a holder of Naples 3 days Young Artecard. I read on Artecard website that you offer a discount with this card. I'd like to ask which ticket I should choose because I can only see "Law enforcement", "Junior" and "Disabled" as reduced tickets on your website. Thanks in advance

The organization's website says the Adventure Tour is for groups of 15 or more people. Were you part of an already organized group or did you buy your individual ticket in advance and assume (and hope) the tour would take place if at least 14 more people bought tickets? Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

I appreciate the information. I am now back from my holiday and when I went to get the ticket for the Standard Tour I asked about being able to participate in the Adventure Tour. Apparently, unless you have a large enough organized group, the Adventure Tour generally is only done in Italian. I only speak English. With a larger organized group they will arranged to have someone who speaks the required language. Their website doesn't explain any of this and even in my 2 emails to them they never provided that explanation.
