About
The church of Monteoliveto, or Sant'Anna dei Lombardi, is known for the quantity and quality of Renaissance artworks it hosts, such as those by Tuscans Benedetto da Maiano and Antonio Rossellino that together with famous frescos by Giorgio Vasari in the Sagrestia Vecchia make the Church one of the most relevant examples of Tuscan Renaissance in Naples. It’s also important to mention the Compianto sul Cristo Morto, a sculptural group by Guido Mazzoni from Modena. Guided Tours of the Museum are organized by the Social Cooperative ParteNeapolis.

- AlexPrato, Italy85 contributionsVasari's sacristy is a jewel to see.Vasari's sacristy is spectacular, a must-see place for art lovers. It's a shame that the hypogeum was closed for restoration. Worth seeing in the chapel of the church is the putto attributed to the young Michelangelo. I think the entrance ticket is a little expensive, however I recommend the visitVisited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 16, 2024
- Paolo S20 contributionsAn impeccable guide to the Neapolitan Renaissance. UNMISSABLE!UNMISSABLE - One of the few works of the Neapolitan Renaissance enriched by the guidance of a group of volunteers, in our case a knowledgeable and helpful Marina! 3 gems in excellent condition: the Sacristy with expertly frescoed vaults and an infinite series of wooden inlays, the Lamentation room with several life-size clay statues mourning the Dead Jesus and, among other finely crafted statuary works, a little spirit holding the banner by a young Michelangelo. As if that wasn't enough... a beautiful church. It's a shame that the underground structure was under renovation. Absolutely worth visitingVisited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 30, 2024

- TinhGiacMarseille, France158 contributionsUnforgettable experienceAn almost unmissable visit if you are visiting Naples. The vaults of the sacristy of the complex Santa Anna des Lombards were painted by Giorgio Vasari in 1545 and are sublime. The room is also covered by the marquetry of the sculptor Giovanni de Verona. The entrance ticket also entitles you to visit the Renaissance chapel. Unforgettable experience!Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 14, 2024
- Crestina2014Castel Bolognese, Italy36 contributionsA little known complex to discoverLittle known place (the girls at the ticket office – very prepared – were curious about how we found out), but it is worth it to see in particular: • the beautiful Lamentation on the Dead Christ by Guido Mazzoni (under restoration, but equally visible); • the Old Sacristy by Vasari, compared with a bit of presumption to the Sistine chapel; remarkable instead is the furniture decorated with wooden inlays; • in the church, in the Chapel of Marino Correale, the altarpiece with the Annunciation of Benedetto da Maiano; on the altarpiece there are two little spirits, the one on the right is attributed to Michelangelo (apparently at the age of 14 he worked at the workshop of Benedetto da Maiano).Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 6, 2024
- Joanna L2 contributionsGo for itDefinitely recommended. The staff is very helpful so even if you get confused with directions, they'll help you out. The ticket office and starting point of the museum is on the left side of the church and you're getting an audioguide plus access to wifi to use it.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 15, 2024
- arturo c2 contributionsShy jewelA shy jewel among the many Neapolitan roaring gems. It deserves the full visit. The reception is courteous and cooperative. The Lamentation of the Dead Christ is a moving work of absolute intensity, currently restoration works are underway that I hope, with a correct setting and careful lighting will be able to give the deserved prominence to this art without equal. As almost always in Italy services are to be completely rethought in a modern key.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 19, 2024
- DeniseLivorno, Italy4 contributionsGood!Spectacular museum complex. At the entrance you can download an audio guide included in the ticket price. The gem is the sacristy painted by Vasari, simply wonderful also for other wooden works by other artists. Beautiful church with some other goodies such as a little angel attributed to Michelangelo and some works of the school of "della Robbia". Beautiful organ. In the museum complex we found a group of young people who from the ticket office to the exit follow the visitor with attention to individual needs. An Experience I Recommendation.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 27, 2024

A treasure still little known, probably one of the most beautiful churches in Naples and perhaps in Italy. Walking through Via Toledo is worth a very short detour and the ticket price to visit the majestic old Sacristy decorated by Vasari.

One of the three or four churches in Naples that you cannot afford not to visit.
The Vasari Sacristy, one of Giorgio Vasari's absolute masterpieces, completed by the wonderful inlays of Giovanni da Verona (1506) alone would "force" the tourist attentive to artistic beauties to visit. Then, however, Mazzoni's "Lamentation on the Dead Christ" (second in beauty only to Niccolò dell'Arca's Lamentation in that of Bologna) and the Renaissance itinerary with the remarkable works of Benedetto da Maiano complete the picture of a church too little included in Neapolitan tourist tours. Go there and it will be a great nice surprise!

Located right next to the Carabinieri barracks in Monte Oliveto, it could go unnoticed. The church can be visited for free; there is another area that can be visited for a fee with or without a guide. Many sculptures and paintings inside.

It's probably a "hidden gem" we discovered on our trip to Naples. Of undoubted artistic value are the works that house the sacristy, where the impressive frescoes of Vasari stand out.
It is quite a surprise to find a work by the author of the frescoes of the dome of Florence Cathedral in these latitudes. Being a vestry the ceilings are low and you can admire with great clarity and closeness the beautiful bill of the work.
Apart from the sacristy it is interesting to visit some of the church chapels, especially those of d'Avalos and Piccolomini.
The great catch of the visit to such artistic treasures is the price of admission which, although in my case because of my disability was free, is quite high, so perhaps it is not a highly recommended visit in a short visit to the city or on a tight budget. It is the price that is the only reason why I do not rate this attraction better.

We visited the Church of Sant'Anna in the morning. The audio guide was very useful for discovering details that we would otherwise have "missed". Furthermore, the girl who showed us the abbots' crypt was clear and exhaustive.

The temple of Renaissance Naples surprises even without paying the not expensive museum ticket, with an interior full of works from the 15th/16th and 17th centuries and a series of notable side chapels with important names (a Michelangelo also appears). However, I recommend paying the ticket to at least admire Vasari's magnificent frescoes. In a city that shows above all its baroque (at least in the churches), a very interesting place.

We've wanted to see the complex for a long time: it's worth it
It is a particular structure, well preserved and well maintained
The museum part is well illustrated by an audio guide, the sacristy frescoed by vasari is splendid
The church, to be visited after the museum and accessible and illustrated by very qualified and equally kind and helpful staff

Almost hidden, yet we are in the center of Naples. Little known even by tourist operators, road signs are practically absent. Too bad, it's a place to absolutely visit: a monumental complex in the true sense of the word, with Renaissance church and chapels, the spectacular marble composition of the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ", the disturbing yet fascinating hypogeum. The visit was well organised, with an audio guide on the App and the presence of a competent operator.

Don't stop at appearances, in our churches there are hidden masterpieces that go unnoticed and it is only thanks to the guides that we are able to understand their historical and cultural value. A note of merit must be given to the young people who welcome us into this church and accompany us to help us experience and understand the works that are preserved inside. Thanks to Armando (our guide) prepared, kind, attentive to compliance with the anti-Covid rules.

We really liked the whole complex, Vasari’s frescoes are truly breathtaking and visiting the hypogeum is really worth it - and it comes with the guide who explains the meaning of the place. Our guide was really nice and helpful. Definitely a place to visit while in Naples.
