Visited Vele today. Alone. Came from center by train. Came inside to two of a buildings to ground floor and 1st floor. In fact not so risky as locals say. Yes, you can meet some Scampian guys around but all in all it depends personaly on you - are looking as easy victim or not.

Was a bit afraid to go there, but it was daytime sun was shining, safe as houses 🤔
Not only ”Gomorra” but I do admire the architecture of Vele, architect Fransesco di Salvo and his idea.

“Scampia” is called this because in the 1960s the Neapolitans went on picnics here, in an area full of greenery and enormous spaces. Then someone decided that the area should be urbanized in a massive and reckless way. The earthquake of the 1980s, then, gave him the body of grace: many people, left homeless, occupied the buildings still under construction and the tower blocks, already badly designed (in particular the sails), were completed in a hasty and superficial, sacrificing space and above all brightness.
The result? Ecomonsters, indiscriminate overbuilding, degradation. Extremely fertile ground for organized crime.
But today Scampia appears a little different. Cultural associations have been created that work towards the recovery of the territory and the urban redevelopment of the area; many of them use buildings confiscated from the Camorra. Parks have sprung up for adults and children, the police are seen more.
The streets of Scampia have wonderful names, dedicated to peace and culture: Viale della Resistenza, Via Antonio Labriola, Via Don Pino Puglisi, Via Gandhi, Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, Parco Ciro Esposito.
There is still a lot to do, the problems remain, the degradation is still visible, but something has moved. Today you can walk freely on the streets of Scampia, without fear.
The inhabitants of Scampia, however, do not allow speculation. On the street we read "Gomorrah: stop feeding on our lives".
The people of Scampia distrust the tourist who photographs, returns to his town, judges and becomes indignant.
It's not nice to go to people's homes, take photos and then speak badly of those who live there.
Long live Scampia and long live its inhabitants

I believe this is the most hardline suburb of Naples.
You should read about it before you go see it.
The Grafiti is awe inspiring as well as the architecture and layout of the buildings. It is for the discerning.

Can we make pictures in front of the vele and walk a little bit as foreigners to admire the place?
