Right. You're staying on Capri and the 50,000 daytrippers per day on a pebble in the Med are getting you down? Get 20mins out of Capri town and you'll get away from the crowd. A pleasant and easy path takes you from Capri and along the coast past expensive looking villas and a great view of the faraglioni. Keep going and you'll come to the Grotta di Matromania - a cave with Roman archaeology within that is an interesting diversion on a wonderful walk. Even better, keep going (up more steps than Jacob's Ladder) and you'll come to a nice cafe en route to the Arc Naturale - a massive natural limestone arch that is a must-see on Capri. Look, if visiting expensive boutiques is your thing, then you might not be interested in this walk, but if you fancy a break from the shopping, have run out of money(!) or enjoy a pleasant stroll with stunning views, DO THIS WALK! It was the highlight of our week stay on Capri - even better than the Blue Grotto!

To get to this location you can do it the hard way or the preferred way. Either way it's one of the most beautiful walks on Capri. Hard way: You can start at the large terrace viewing point of the Faraglioni and take a pathway (Via Tragara) which traces the southeastern coastline to Via de Pizzolungo. It is a very nice walk until you hit a narrow and extremely steep set of steps where at the top you arrive at the Grotta di matermania. Impressive location and nice pit stop before the final climb up a very steep set of steps. You arrive near a great restaurante Le Grotelle. Rest, eat, enjoy the view and check out L'Arco Naturale and a 15 minute easy walk to the main piazza. Recommended way: Visit L'Arco Naturale and make your way down the first set of steep steps on Via de Pizzolungo and you come to the Grotta di Matermania shortly thereafter. Continue on the path to Via de Tragara. Great picturesque views of the Faraglioni on your way to the terrace.

My husband and just got back from Capri and we visited this cave while we were there. It is many many steps down but you don't have to climb back up as you can follow another route back to town. We met some people doing the reverse trek and they were very exhausted trying to climb all those steps back up to the top. Right at the top is an amazing restaurant built in a cave , La Grotelle . It has a beautiful terrace with stunning views . Great spot for lunch while on this hike

Maybe it is just me, but I have seen so many caves, and so impressive... It was on my way, but I would not go out of my track for it.

A sign in the center of Capri will show you the way to the Arco Naturale and on the way, close to the arco you will see the sign to the grotta. The path is absolutely amazing, lots and lots of stairs but the view you are going to have it;s worth the pain. The path will lead you back to the center o Capri so there is no need to return on the same way. Take water with you as there is none on the way.

We came across this by accident as we were walking to the natural arch. It’s really just an old cave. Worth 5 minutes but nothing special.

This is an outstanding, rigorous hike. Follow directions carefully or you could end up climbing hundreds of extra feet like we did. Google the ruins afterward. Note- the arch was under scaffolding when we were there.

My husband & I hired a boat/captain when were last in Capri. Super fun & the captain took us through the Grotta di Matromania. He explained you should kiss as you float through. Fortunately I adore my husband (especially in Italy) so this was fun.

We enjoyed hiking to these limestone caves. Fortunately we had a guide who helped us appreciate what we were seeing. It was nice to step away from the crowds and experience a quieter side of the island.
