Don’t struggle up the steps with your bags when you get off the ferries in Sorrento . With your back to the sea turn right and head in the direction of the beach area keeping close to the cliff. The entrance to the lift is cut out from the cliff and you get a ticket inside. It comes upto town behind piazza San Antonio and is a 10 minute walk to the train station

very handy. When you get off the ferry from Naples (or wherever), turn right when you get to the beginning of the pier, look for signs to 'the Lift'. Go past Peter's beach and you will see it in about 100m. There was no line-up for us (noon on a Wednesday), the ticket was 1.10 and it took only a minute to get to the top.

We used this lift to get down to the port side and the beach and sun bathing area. It’s better to pay the couple of euros for a return journey if you don’t want to walk there and back up. It’s easy to get the tickets, there is a booth at the top and the bottom. Great if you have just eaten, you are back up to the main town in under a minute.

One of the most obvious things about Sorrento is that the town is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the Cay of Naples. This was probably an advantage the original inhabitants as it would have made invasion by marauders from the sea rather difficult. Today it serves to provide spectacular views of that same bay from the cliff top parks and luxury hotels.

There is however the question of how one gets down from the town to the waters edge. There are several reasons for wanting to do this. The beaches and beach clubs, both public and those run by the cliff top hotels are all here. Also is the port with its ferries heading out across the bay to neighbouring Naples, Ischa and Capri among other destinations.

The more important question is, how after one has done whatever they wanted to do at the bottom, is how do they get back up again?

One can drive either by car, taxi or bus. There is a road the Via Luigi de Maio that cuts through the cliff face and descends or ascends between the two. Some local public buses do move from the centre of town to the Marina Picalo and they’re inexpensive and fairly frequent at least during the day.

Taxis on the other had are not inexpensive. We were quoted 25 Euros for a trip from the Marina to the train station in the centre of town, a six-minute drive. As for cars , parking is both expensive and a bit hard to find.

One can of course walk. There is a rather long and steep staircase at the north west edge of the Piazza Tasso that goes down to the Via Luigi de Maio. One though had better be in reasonable shape and not suffer from vertigo should they decide to use it.

An alternate and slightly easier route can be found at the north end of the Villa Comunale di Sorrento a large city park overlooking the bay. Here there is a series of switchback ramps and stairs that also runs between the waters edge and the cliff top. It though still requires some degree of physical effort.

The final option, for those not in the best of shape, or just lazy, and not willing to part with a lot of Euros is to take the elevator. At the western edge of the Villa Comunale di Sorrento is the rather non descript entrance to the Sorrento Left. Inside a small elevator whisks one down to the lower level and out a small tunnel to the water edge by the beach clubs. A short walk east puts one at the marina. Ascending is simply a reverse of the above.

The elevator is small, carrying barely a half dozen people at a time and they’re jammed in. The trip though is mercifully short, only a few seconds. There are ticket booths at both levels and the cost is 1.20 Euros one way or a return trip for 2 Euros with discounts for small children and the disabled.

If one is rushing to catch a ferry or excursion or just to laze at one of the beach clubs or cafes on the water edge this is the fastest most economical ways to get up or down the cliff.

6 tourists and one staff member in the right hand lift, going up, around 3pm, 17 Oct. The lift got stuck, fortunately the young staff member radioed his colleague for help, the lift was eventually lowered to ground floor. Scary experience, dread to think what would have happened if staff member not in lift with us! The older staff member, on the turnstile, was not prepared to give us our money back. Expected us to get back in the lift! Younger man took back our tickets and returned our money. Got the impression it's a regular event, use at your own risk!

I mean what can you say, it’s a lift that takes you from the beach to the top of the hill. The lowest you can get for a holiday I guess but it will get you there, I mean you are eating the most wonderful pasta all this time in Italy and you should probably burn it off by taking the stairs.... Steins of a Peroni at the top for €15

In the early days of our visits to Sorrento we happily walked down a very steep hill to the port of Marina Piccola and, on occasions when we couldn't be bothered to wait for a bus, we would hike back up.

On a trip about three years ago, we returned from Capri totally exhausted after extensive exploring in the heat. We headed off to catch a bus. The queue was long, and buses tiny.We noticed a long line of people heading off towards a narrow alleyway so we decided to follow and, lo and behold, there was a lift! What a wonderful surprise. We went through a turnstile and paid one euro to get to the top. Brilliant! Best euro I have ever spent!!!

The lift came out in the garden at Villa Comunale, next to Hotel Tramontano.Fantastic!

Five minutes later we were in Tasso Square.

Have used the lift several times since to get back up from the port. We usually walk down the steps from The Villa Comunale to the port as the views are so lovely.

After exiting the ferry at the port there are signs directing you to the lift. If you don’t use the lift, you will have to walk up several, and I mean several, steps. If you have luggage, save your back and follow the signs to the lift, the cost is one euro.

If you plan to take the boat to Capri or Naples, this is the way to go from the city center. It may look or sound weird that you are paying a buck or so to take an elevator but after taking it both ways you realize it’s so so worth it. If you are traveling with kids or if you are carrying big bags then you will probably thank the person who made these elevators. You are paying for the convenience and it’s worth it.

This lift is great when you want to go from the marina to the main town. It is only 1 Euro per person and well worth it, particularly in the hot weather. There are two lifts so any queues subside quickly and the top point is close to the park and shops.
