- Chimm02Reggio Calabria, Italy178 contributionsMagically ChristmasWe visited the historic center of Salerno on the occasion of Luci d'arte 2023. I was fascinated and surprised. I could go on about the seafront, via dei Mercanti, Corso Vittorio Emanuele... but I'll just add: Thank you, Salerno!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 22, 2024
- 322ingriddAverbode, Belgium28 contributionsSurprising SalernoUpon arrival you get the impression that Salerno is a boring city with a large port. Difficult parking, busy. But this changes quickly. Plenty of parking lots, beautiful city center. (historical part). Cozy streets with nice corners. After just 1 day of stay, you will be greeted by the local residents as if you have lived there for years. People live outside and with each other! Salerno is also a perfect base to visit Amalfi (bus or boat). The wine bar (Domo i'viano (via Duomo) is an absolute must to enjoy excellent wines and tasty snacks. A must-do restaurant: Casa Cavour. Every effort is made to make you happy! Don't leave Sarleno for enjoyed delicious dishes here.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 14, 2024
- David FNew York City, New York6 contributionsSalerno-he perfect place from which you can explore the Amalfi coast and a great destination itselfSalerno; especially the old town is one of the most underrated places on the Amalfi coast. We stayed in the old city which comes alive at night with many excellent restaurants ( no need for a car). and cafes. It was the perfect place to use as a base to see other places. We took a bus to Vietri (15 minutes) and a Ferry to other little villages without the crowds of Amalfi and Capri. The restaurants are very reasonable and the people are wonderfulVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2024
- Anna MEurope4,235 contributionsMedieval!A medieval old town, with its narrow streets and vintage shops, is grouped in the western end of the city starting from Piazza Portanova. The Salerno poet Alfonso Gatto liked to call it "medieval jewel" as it contains palaces and churches of the Lombard and Norman eras. And then, the historic center of Salerno has its flagship in the Via dei Mercanti with its long history of trade that still characterizes it. In this period, the whole old town is also festively decorated with Christmas lights and points of light even in the alleys. Bellissimo!Visited December 2024Traveled with friendsWritten December 12, 2024
- Giancarlo L3 contributionsFull of lights and roomsNice surprise. Old town full of lights, shops and places to eat well. Clean city. Great parking in Piazza Liberta... given the influx of people it would be difficult to visit the center without this parking. I recommend the visit.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten January 6, 2025

To me the old city is really charming with its typical winding roads and steps, arches and stunning views... loads of places to eat and drink for all tastes and pockets, from the really traditional to the most poshy.
Remarkable the Luci di Artista festival across Dec/Jan.
Some interesting monuments and museums alongside the Duomo and numerous other churches.
People is generally friendly and helpful and it won't be too hard to find English speakers among bars and restaurants.
Why not 5 stars? We've been here few times now, and even if we understand it is not an easy city to manage, it can be a bit cleaner!

Salerno is a human city. Great train, bus & boat connections to use to explore the area. We visited Pompei, Herculaneum, Positano and Naples from here. The city centre (old & new) is great to wonder around in. We stayed in the Torrione area which is mixing with the locals. Great quality and value restaurants. Not touristy, but mins from the beaches which are mainly used by locals. Main resorts on the coast are very touristy, crowded and expensive (with lots of steps to climb). Boat trips from Salerno are the best way to explore. E.g. Salerno to Positano is 14 euro.

Salerno was a very nice experience, we stopped during a cruise and were fortunate enough to stumble upon a craft fair that was taking place, in addition, the local team was playing nearby so the restaurants were full of fans, and managed to visit a beautiful church. One thing that would’ve been nice would have been an Uber, we could not get one and taxis were scarce maybe because of the game. I was told Ubers didn’t go to that area and taxis were pricey. Would have liked to visited some of the sites like the monastery. But due to time constraints just walked the mail road and village. Lots of great souvenir shops and friendly people. Graffiti on some the beautiful side streets was a sad.

We returned to Salerno after visiting it on a cruise 14 years ago. What can I say, the historic center offers nothing exceptional other than getting lost in the streets full of souvenir shops and above all lots of street food at a good price. Worth seeing (for a fee) is the cathedral. The seafront is beautiful and reminds me a little of Miami, full of young people especially in the evening. On the advice of a friend from Salerno, he told us to park in the nearby della liberta car park which, among other things, is paid for with the telepass. A stone's throw from the center and if you come from Vietri it is located immediately after the port. I recommend taking Via dei Mercanti, the old part of Salerno, and continuing on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the most elegant part of the city, going to the station and returning from the seafront. A few words about the lights, apart from the Piazza delle Medusa, the Villa Comunale and some lights outside the centre, nothing special, they can now be found in all the cities of Italy.

We were so impressed by this old town. It has a wonderful atmosphere. This southern Italian city really has something special. Very beautiful old streets, great little shops with local handicrafts, great murals and a beautiful promenade, as well as many small restaurants and cafés that invite you to linger. We will be back...

We were in Salerno in mid-August and stayed a few days. I found the center rather neglected, I had an impression of sadness: shops the same as those in many other cities (usual chains) with a few exceptions, rubbish, the greenery of the promenade along the sea quite neglected not to mention the poor little trees on the promenade of the center, half dead, with no possibility of a little shade, in short...sad.
I wonder what leads a municipal administration to conform in this way to other places, without then achieving an appreciable result.

I loved Salerno and I prefer it more than Naples. The city is small but very scenic. The old and new have match very well.Is a safe city-something that not happen at Naples- with a lot of attractions to visit, shops to buy clothes, caffeteries to drink a cappuccino.

When in Salerno make sure to set aside some time to wander around the old city. The cobblestones and narrow streets hold countless interesting shops, bars and restaurants from hi end to low end. Stroll the small alleys and discover even more interesting shops. A great way to spend a late afternoon

We loved wandering around the Centro Storico, peering down alleyways and into interesting nooks. This feels like an authentic old quarter and not a tourist trap done up to lure people in. There are no souvenir shops, just the kind of stores that local people use. It seemed to us that you couldn't go wrong walking into almost any of the charming restaurants. I can only hope that the increasing number of tourists in Salerno won't spoil the Centro Storico the way Amalfi seems to have been spoiled.

è difficile fare una selezione, perchè ognuna ha una sua particolarità. Il consiglio è di camminare naso all'aria e lasciarsi trasportare dalla curiosità. In poche ore è posiibile percorrere l'intero centro antico

typically shops, in autumn and winter, close at 20.00 in the evening and at 13.00 in the morning. In summer they close at 13-30 and at 21.00 in the sumer

Buona vacanza!
