the most beautiful kilometer in whole Italian peninsula, so the famous writer D'Annunzio said and I have to agree completely!

The walk is well landscaped on one side with Straights of Messina and Sicily on the other. Don't miss the sunset - il tramonto. There are also a number of places to dine al fresco along the way.

The seafront of Reggio Calabria is almost two kilometers in a wide sky and sea scenario.
It has the volcano Etna on the back stage.
There is the monument to the Greek goddess Athena in honor of the then king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III on the background of the Strait of Messina and the monument to the Victory of Italy in the First World War.

Having been told by the waitress in our hotel that the lungomara in Reggio was the finest in the world, I confess to being disappointed! It was a little tired and run down.

The Lungomare Falmacotta provides some excellent views of Sicily across the Straights of Messina. The promenade (both upper and lower) provides excellent vantage point for the view and a for aleisurely stroll on a summers day. The upper promenade is actually an enclosure for the main railway line which runs underneath and along the coast and through Reggio. The beach I have to say is questionable. The few access points open to the public are very stoney and there are lots of pieces of glass littered throughout - so be very careful with young children and make sure that you have some protection for your feet. That said the view across to Sicilly is breathtaking and best enjoyed in the morning sunshine when Sicily is shown in relief - it can often appear hazy in the afternoon light. There are a number of beach clubs/restraunts along the Lungomare so you can sit with a drink and admire the view.

We arrived and parked right next to the Lungomare and walked along after a visit to the national museum, just 100m from the car park. There were ice ream shops, cafes, and restaurants nearby. On the sea front there are Champagne Bars and he like facing Sicily, a great place to while away the hours, day or night.

What a spectacular, beautiful seafront, a wide walkway along which to lick a gelato on a balmy summer night, joining the thousands of others promenading to enjoy the scenery.

You can almost touch Sicily across the strait of Messina.

The walkway is actually the top of a tunnel for the trains below. So instead of ugly unpassable rail tracks, you have this beautiful promenade.

A little inland and you have street after street of restaurants (as well as on the lungomare itself of course) -- the best offerings of Reggio. The Saturday night we went the streets were full of people out enjoying the night.

The museum with its collection of ancient bronze statues had just closed.

This is the walkway and bicycle area along Reggio's side of the Strait of Messina. Across the Strait you view the the sity of Messina, island of Sicily. The city has done a great job of developing a pleasant pedestrian and bicycle area. As you look across, you can watch the ships from all over the world pass through this historic waterway. Think of Odesseus and his men traveling north to meet their fate at Scilla, just beyond the mouth of the strait. (Which you shoulld also visit -- a 20 minute train ride from Reggio Centrale.) Think also of Garibaldi and his Redshirts crossing in the 1850s to begin their fight to unite Italy. The most beautiful view is by night, but on a clear day you can look to the south and see the majesty of Mt. Etna. Gelatteria and caffes are within easy walking distance. This is a "must do" in Reggio.

It is called like this with reason. I offers nice view on the Etna and Sicily accross Mesina straight, but also has a lot of beautiful buildings, monumens and ficus trees along the walkway.
