Nicola was an amazing guide. His knowledge of the history and culture of Matera informed everything we saw. This was the real thing -- not myths and public relations. Nicola's experiences in archaeology and anthropology informed the tour. But this was not an academic lesson....More

We had a nice time walking around Matera with Nicola. He is clearly knowledgeable but it would be nicer if the guide could engage more with the guests and if there was more structure to the narrative.

The sassi are ancient caves in which people lived for thousands of years. 157 cave churches were dug out of the limestone. It is an absolute must-see destination. Truly a world wonder. A World Heritage Site since 1993. Splendid.

We had an awesome tour with Nicola today. I learned about negative architecture, which is the creation of structure by taking away materials rather than putting them together. He told a story of the creativity and ingenuity of the builders of the caves that are...More
