Most excellent day in Matera with Luigi. We spent the morning exploring il sasso caveoso. After a delicious lunch in a restaurant recommended by Luigi (see my review on Dimitria) and a much needed siesta, we explored the piano, the civita and il sasso barisano. Luigi is super friendly knowledgeable. He grew up in Matera and knows the town like the back of his hand. He took us to underground areas that are not accessible to the larger public and shared so much of his extensive knowledge about the history, the architecture and the traditions with us. We did the tour in Italian but he speaks fluent English too. Matera is a town beyond belief and Luigi made its history come to life for us. Grazie mille per un giorno eccezionale Luigi!

My husband, sister and I booked Luigi’s tour of the Sassi at the recommendation of some American friends who had done his tour several years ago. Luigi’s tour exceeded our expectations. Luigi is a native of Matera and you can feel his passion for his town’s history. It’s also fun walking around with someone like Luigi who is deeply a part of the local community and was greeted everywhere by shopkeepers and residents as we walked through the town. The prepared tour was well designed to give us a good overview of Matera’s history from ancient times through the present, and to show us lots of interesting parts of the Sassi. Also, whenever we had questions or asked about a building we were passing by, Luigi knew the answers to our questions and seemed to know the history of every building!
The pace of the tour was also great. It’s not easy to walk through the Sassi if you’re not accustomed to it - everything is stone and there are stairs everywhere! But Luigi set a good pace so that we saw a lot but still had plenty of time to rest along the way while he explained the points of interest to us.

Our tour with Luigi was amazing. His love for this wonderful place and its place in history was so evident during our 3 hour walking tour. He picked us up at our hotel and brought us around the town and its historic areas, giving us so many insights into how the area evolved over time and how people adapted. We stopped frequently to hear his stories and to just absorb the breathtaking views. Our time together was the highlight of my trip. I wholeheartedly recommend you book a tour with Luigi, you will not be disappointed.

We were a group of 4 English people and had been recommended to use Luigi by another guide in Taranto called Stefania. We were very impressed with his detailed knowledge of the long history of Matera. As three of us had been to Matera several times in the past we were surprised and delighted to have a different approach....and not just visit countless churches and houses. Things have changed a lot over the years when visiting Matera so it was even better for us to get more information and see different building in this vast network of cave homes and churches. Please use Luigi if you are English speakers as he speaks excellent English. Highly recommended.

Luigi showed us around in his own ‘backyard’ on an amazing, professional and relaxing way. Telling us all the details and answering all the questions made us understand what the Sassi di Matera is all about.
Thanks Luigi for you kindness, hospitality and knowledge

Our experience in Matera has been really fabulous, and Luigi played a great part in it thanks to his very competent, informative, comprehensive and fun tour. He gave us great recommendations on other things to see and do over and above sightseeing, that made our days there really spectacular. Finally, his English language is really great, which is great in case you don’t speak Italian. Highly and fondly recommended!

We have recently spent a wonderful and very informative day with Luigi in Matera. The morning was spent exploring the Sassi and the afternoon the historic centre of Matera. Luigi’s intimate knowledge of his home town brought the history of Matera to life for us.
Luigi has excellent English and was always happy to answer any questions we had.
My friends and I would have no hesitation in recommending Luigi for any of his tours.
We had a brilliant day!
Grazie mille Luigi
