Most excellent day in Matera with Luigi. We spent the morning exploring il sasso caveoso. After a delicious lunch in a restaurant recommended by Luigi (see my review on Dimitria) and a much needed siesta, we explored the piano, the civita and il sasso barisano. Luigi is super friendly knowledgeable. He grew up in Matera and knows the town like the back of his hand. He took us to underground areas that are not accessible to the larger public and shared so much of his extensive knowledge about the history, the architecture and the traditions with us. We did the tour in Italian but he speaks fluent English too. Matera is a town beyond belief and Luigi made its history come to life for us. Grazie mille per un giorno eccezionale Luigi!

We were a group of 4 English people and had been recommended to use Luigi by another guide in Taranto called Stefania. We were very impressed with his detailed knowledge of the long history of Matera. As three of us had been to Matera several times in the past we were surprised and delighted to have a different approach....and not just visit countless churches and houses. Things have changed a lot over the years when visiting Matera so it was even better for us to get more information and see different building in this vast network of cave homes and churches. Please use Luigi if you are English speakers as he speaks excellent English. Highly recommended.

Luigi showed us around in his own ‘backyard’ on an amazing, professional and relaxing way. Telling us all the details and answering all the questions made us understand what the Sassi di Matera is all about.
Thanks Luigi for you kindness, hospitality and knowledge

Our experience in Matera has been really fabulous, and Luigi played a great part in it thanks to his very competent, informative, comprehensive and fun tour. He gave us great recommendations on other things to see and do over and above sightseeing, that made our days there really spectacular. Finally, his English language is really great, which is great in case you don’t speak Italian. Highly and fondly recommended!

My family enjoyed a lovely tour of Matera with Luigi earlier this year. A very personable tour guide who knows and loves this magnificent city. We have recommended him to others and would love to spend time with him again when visiting Matera.

Luigi is a highly experienced tour guide. He is a font of knowledge about the history of Matera. Despite his experience (and most likely, the hundreds of tours he has conducted), he brings forth an unbridled enthusiasm. He is animated, knowledgeable, and fun to be with. I have taken probably hundreds of tours. Luigi is one of the best tour guides I have ever had.

The bottom line: I can't say enough good things about Luigi and his unforgetable tour. If you're wondering whom to hire to share the story and history of amazing Matera, look no further.

Luigi's English is excellent. When I complimented him on this and asked how he had learned the language so well, he explained that he had studied extensively and spent a month abroad. So, his communication was excellent. And so was his tour.

We started with the food tour, which I cannot recommend highly enough. This was more than just sampling a few local foods. It was the story of a family steeped in Matera's history and their quest to continue long-standing traditions by serving the ancient food started three generations earlier. In this case it was bread. The entire experience was informative, interesting and deligthful. I was even able to made the traditional bread myself. Absolutey fantastic!

Next came a tour of the sassi, the ancient carved rock city, one of the oldest continually habitated cities in the world. Luigi grew up here and recalled his family's history, along with the city's. It's one of the most incredible stories I've heard. Matera is the ultimate come back city. We walked,we talked, I learned and was left better for the time Luigi spent sharing his city with me. He is smart, kind and very personable.

Matera is best experienced with a guide. Without one, you'll miss so many important details. And Luigi is the perfect one with whom to discover this magical place and learn its incredible story.

Thank you, Luigi, for making Matera even more special and taking me on a day I will never forget!

We did two tours with Luigi on the same day. Having lived in Matera all his life and known the Sassi when it was uninhabited, he was able to give us a greater insight into the history of the area than you ever get from a guide book. Also visited a Matera bakery and olive oil museum both of which were very interesting. Would highly recommend Luigi as a guide.
