An attractive castle and worth taking a few pictures but you can't go inside. If you didn't ask about it you probably would never see it

Uphill a little way from the centre of Matera, this is fenced off so you can’t get close. But it’s a different structure from most of the rest of the town and there is a nice view.

The walk up to Castello Tramontano was uphill, a good hike. Because it was fenced off, you couldn't really get close to it, but none-the-less the only stone castle in Matera. I noticed that a newly built bike rental station was about ready to open up.

…the Tramontano Castle in Matera!!…it is located in a dominant position overlooking the city!…on the highest hill!!…I got there via a small uphill road!!…clearly!!…and the Castle looks impressive and majestic!!… in fact its function was more than defensive… of control!!… and it served to reassure Mr. Tramontano from possible local insurrections!!… it is said that the costs for the construction were very high and the people were forced to paying exaggerated tributes for years!!…until he revolted against the tyrant and Count Giancarlo Tramontano was killed in an alley in the town!!…after the Count's death some of the Castle's works remained unfinished!!…in fact it cannot be visited!!… only open for the particular days of the FAI!!…in fact I only saw it externally!!…around it you can see the Castle Park…where there are often music events…theatre etc!!…the only beautiful thing!!… that from this Tramontano Castle…you can see a spectacular view of the city!!…

It's not even worth getting close to, there's really nothing to see, perhaps for enthusiasts, the three mighty towers are interesting but in reality you can only see one properly. It's two minutes from the Sassi so it doesn't take anything if you're curious but really nothing special
