It’s a special museum, a must see site in Matera. This masterpiece was made of tufa by the artist Eustachio Rizzi. He started working in 1996 and finished this work 1999. It’s a unique creation, we liked it very much.

A must see-must do during your discovery of Sassi Matera. The artistry and fine hand work required to create this is amazing, and it gives you a good perspective of the actual old city

The minature reconstruction is to be found in a small shop along Via Fiorentini. It is a straight walk into the Sassi and can be found on the right hand side. It has taken 3 years to build and is a true represenation of the Sassi. It is worth a visit just to admire the detail in the buildings.

Was located close to our hotel and we needed some figurines for our nativity scene so we picked them up from there. They have a very good selection and good quality ones are hard to find. Ended up buying another whole nativity. The model of the Sassi is amazing...worth visiting this store to see.

We wandered into this store/museum and were enchanted by the scale reproduction of the Sassi area, complete with the cathedral at the summit. It's free to visit, but they ask for a donation if you take pictures. They also sell various things made out of tufa, a local, porous (and hence lightweight) stone.

In this day and age of globalization, it's tough to find authentic souvenirs, made by the people who actually live in the place you are visiting. I highly recommend stopping in here and admiring the handiwork, and possibly buying souvenirs for yourself or folks back home. The stone is lightweight, so not too heavy to carry home. (However wrap it well so it doesn't break in your suitcase.)

Fantastic model of the sassi in Matera. Free to get in as it's a shop rather than a museum. We visited around 9pm and was not busy. Worth a look they ask for a donation if you take photos. Only needs 10 minutes if not busy but worthwhile.

Worth seeking this out, not hard to find. Very cool - I encourage a small donation to the artist, I can't imagine the hours of work put into creating this model of the Sassi. Is it geographically accurate? I have no idea bit it's a neat thing to see regardless and especially if you're into models!

We fell across this "museum" whilst walking through the sassi of Matera. Whilst one can only admire the amount of work that went in to the miniature of Matera, this is not the only one you will see as you wander around. This is actually a shop where the sculptor sells his works. They are ok but again not unique.

And he was decidedly unwelcoming when we visited. Out of season with very few people around, he should have been more pleased to see us!

I was quite interested in one of his sculptures at 25 euros. But came away empty handed as he will only take cash. Even the Italian lady who was also browsing was surprised. As she said, how on earth are you going to sell to foreign tourists if you don't take credit or debit cards? If he had, we would've bought a number of things. Instead we moved on without a momento; well, from this place as there were plenty of more opportunities to buy as we continued our stroll.

Matera is a wonderful place and there are lots of opportunities to buy souvenirs so spend your money where you feel happy and will come away feeling you have made someone's day. This, for me, didn't apply here.

Good morning Arpala, our Miniature is the only one in Matera so it's unique because it's born by the genius and the creativity of Mr. Rizzi. Every piece of tufo is unique because unique is the hand who produces it even if, as you can see, there are a lot of similar little shops that sells them . We are sorry for your negative opinion but we have a little shop and for now we don't accept credit cards so I can't understand how we could solve this problem if this is our actual policy. Best regards
