These were the best frescos we saw in Matera. Several small, ancient churches, convents, and monasteries were carved out of soft stone in the Sassi neighborhood, some as early as the 9th century. Many have frescoes that date from the 11th to 14th century. The frescoes in this church are particularly interesting and rather well preserved. See several rupestrian (rock-hewn) churches as part of your tour.

Excavations in Chiesa rupestre di Santa Lucia alle Malve, have been dated at 9th century. The frescoes date from 11th-17th century. Hopefully the mould can be kept at bay, so future generations are able to view these treasures.
No photography allowed but there are postcards available. The staff, thankfully seem to be on the ball with regards to photography in the rupestrian churches. A staff member literally hunted down the person responsible, as soon as she heard the click of the camera.
The brochure has opening hours listed as -
1st April to 1st November 10am/7pm closed 2nd July
2nd November to 31st March 10am/2pm closed 25th December
Pay €3 for entry or buy a ticket for €6 and this gives entry to three of the following Rupestrian Churches -
Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve
Church of Santa Maria de Idris & San Giovanni in Monterrone
Church of San Pietro Barisano

This is one of the rock churches that is featured in the "package" along with two others for €6. Absolutely fascinating for its varied environments and details. Some of the spaces could use urgent conservation, which hopefully will be carried out given that the site is so central and included on all the basic itineraries of the city. A must see! When we saw it a large group of tourists (from Poland) were visiting, with what seemed to be a very detailed description. I advise referring to the pamphlet available at the door if you don't have your own guide. It's well-worth knowing about the varied details. You are not allowed to take pictures internally (as with the other two churches of this ticket), so do remember to ask for the pamphlet so that you can have a souvenir of the frescoes.

If you plan on visiting many of the cave churches buy a combined ticket. We were able to get a discount with our ticket from another church. The frescoes are interesting, especially the one of the breastfeeding Mary. Small and can be visited in less than half an hour. No photos allowed. Not correctly marked on google maps, but there are plenty of vendors around willing to tell you where to go.

Beautiful old church that has old frescoes that are reasonably well preserved. It really is amazing that these very old churches remain so well preserved so we can look back at bygone days.

The frescoes are better preserved than in the Rupestre di Madonna del Idris. Interesting is the breastfeeding Madonna.

This church is incredible and full of history. Santa Lucia alle Malve is a rupestrian church in Matera, an ancient monastery that welcomed Benedictine-order nuns between the 8th and 16th centuries. Inside Santa Lucia alle Malve – located near Sasso Caveoso – you can still see many mural paintings, mostly from the 13th century, with a wide range of holy representations including the Nursing Madonna, Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Gregory, Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica.
I highly recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes to visit this church.

They don’t allow any pictures, but don’t tell you this until after you buy the ticket. Not worth the visit, in my opinion.

To me, looking at Byzantine influenced art from 1200's through 1400's is just overwhelmingly incredible. Stand there and just imagine people standing there 800 years ago looking at the same artwork. St. Michael the Archangel, the virgin with saints at her coronation, St. Benedict, St. Nicholas are all depicted. This is one of the most intriguing places I've ever visited. Walking the old stone streets and pathways finding the different sites was so fun. Pay the 6 euro to see three different cave church sites, it's worth it!

Really fantastic and interesting site. I'd suggest starting (or at least going early) to Casa Noha - a house bequeathed by a Matera family to the FAI, and no a place to watch a series of four short films (total about 25 minutes) with several language headsets available, to learn a little of the history of the Sassi, from the paleolithic times until today. (NB this is free to members of FAI, and also to those who have UK National Trust membership, although you ned to present your card). Other highlights are the Rupestrian churches (Sant Maria di Idris with incredibly well preserved wall paintings, Santa Lucia alle Malve, and San Pietro Bassano - you can get a joint ticket for 6 Euros for all three) and Casa Grotta di Vico Solitari, which give a look inside what these dwellings would have looked like. You can get a good idea of life here through the ages by covering half the site in 3 or 4 hours. There's a lot of steps though - some people were taking tuk-tuks. Perhaps spend a night, and do half one day and then half the next.

Come si chiama il biglietto cumulativo? Grazie
Written July 5, 2021
Ciao,
