The walking tour with Antonio was a highlight of our trip to Southern Italy. Simply the best way to see Matera and understand the history, people and culture of this incredible city.

My wife and I had a 4 hour, fascinating tour with Antonio Manicone. He is a native of Matera whose grandparents lived in the sassi. He will take you through the centuries of history but will also give you the flavor of what life was like right up to the 1950s. He's very knowledgeable, his English is good and he is a really nice guy. You will like this tour.

On the recommendation of my son who had used Antonio's services last year I booked a tour with him. When I mentioned this to my hotel they said there was no-one better in Matera.

So I was a little disappointed that on the day he was unable to take the tour. However he sent Cosimo instead - well if Antonio is the best guide Cosimo runs a close second.

What a fascinating tour, made more poignant by the fact Cosimo was a native Materan whose grandparents actually lived in the Sassis.

This was an extraordinary tour by an exceptionally well informed guide with a superb command of English. Full of surprises and very detailed we were enthralled & appalled (at some of the historical detail and visiting the Sassi).

It lasted around 2.5 - 3 hrs and was exhausting) not totally physically but also mentally.

If you're in Matera this is a must do.

I had heard such great things about the tour and was excited to have been able to schedule our tour almost a month in advance. When we showed up where we were supposed to meet we couldn't find Antonio. My husband ended up calling him and he was with a different group of people. He didn't remember scheduling with us until I showed him the email confirmation. He was very apologetic, but we could have done more research knowing what we were looking at if we didn't plan on learning from the tour.

Excellent start to our time in Matera. Antonio was most gracious for though we arrived later than our scheduled start time (we became lost in the maze of the Matera streets!) Antonio still managed to fit us into his schedule. It was well worth having a personal tour as we were able to walk around the town and stop and take photos and ask questions at a good pace. Antonio was born in Matera and his love and passion for the place was palpable. His background studies in history no doubt helped make him a most knowledgeable and engaging guide. We highly recommend him.

We booked the tour after reading the excellent reviews on ta and we were so glad that we had the benefit of Antonio's knowledge to reveal the history and architecture of Matera which we could not have appreciated without his help. Well worth the price, I wish we had had more time in Matera

You can walk around Matera without a guide, however, having Antonio walk us through and share his knowledge was invaluable! He was just great. I agree with another poster...wear thick-soled comfy shoes. Also, Antonio recommended several restaurants and we chose Soul Kitchen, which was fabulous!

This review is a little late in coming but no less awarding. I am so grateful to have booked a tour with Antonio of Matera Tour Guide. I always travel "self-guided" but felt I wished to understand more about an area so beguiling as Matera. We actually booked 2 tours: a private day-long trekking tour, as well as a 2-hr group Sassi tour the following morning.

This review is about our trekking tour. I don't know exactly where we were that day ( in the Parco della Mungia Materana) but he drove at least 20 minutes away from Matera and into a field in the middle of nowhere to park the car. We then hiked a long time following no trails but through underbrush and rocks and then eventually closer to the gorge and finally down ancient steps carved into the limestone and rock....over slippery wet moss, through patches of daffodils and corms waiting for spring, past wild boar tracks and scat -- to where we could hear and see the river and the rolling hills on the plateau and far away was Montecaglioso. .then we kept going up and down climbing boulders getting closer to caves and churches in the gorge. Antonio took us to very special places....quiet, devotional places....old areas for farm animals with frescoes, tombs...he said there were 156 caves in the gorge.....it was not an easy trek and he later confessed it was the "difficult" trek as he prefers it to all the others. Yes...he's young and we were 65 yrs....so we were tired but a good tired and we know it was an experience of a lifetime. Antonio is a young man who cares deeply about Matera's heritage and also where it is headed. He is professional, sweet, knowledgeable and an excellent teacher/guide. I easily recommend his services.

We could not have appreciated the history and geology of Matera without this excellent tour with Antonio. Even though it was raining in early November, Antonio gave us a thorough tour of the less newly developed side of the sassi, answering in perfect English all of our questions and providing valuable information on both the ancient and recent history of the area. I booked through the website and got a prompt reply with service as promised.

Wonderful tour with Antonio, a proud son of Matera and a veritable fount of information. Well-paced, with necessary breaks, our walk of one of the few places the world with continuous human habitation for over 9000 years answered so many of the questions we had and much more. Antonio provided perspective on the layout of the city, the views were spectacular, and the visit to and in-depth explanation of ancient and ingenious water collection systems was fascinating. Couldn't recommend him more highly!
