Through a quiet path, among vineyards and wheat fields, you reach the Crypt of Original Sin. This exceptional cave church represents one of the oldest examples of the rupestrian art of Southern Italy. Its extraordinary cycle of frescoes, made five hundred years before Giotto, illustrates scenes from the Old and New Testament. For its theological value and artistic pictorial compendium, the cave-church has been called the 'Sistine Chapel' of the rupestrian wall painting.

If in Italy it is well worth the trip to see what was found in a cave back in the 1960's oldest known Fresco in Italy! By the way you will now understand what the true forbidden fruit was! You must make a reservation as only the guild can get you down this dirt road and into the cave. Meeting... More

If you're staying in Matera get your hotel to make a booking for you to see the 'cript of original sin' - it's outside the town ( you'll meet your tour guide at a local petrol station ) - the guide is excellent & the hour long presentation plus q&a lasts an hour. These monks were painting these frescoes in... More

If you go to Matera then you must visit the Cript of the Original Sin. Be sure to make a reservation as there is only one tour company and I can appreciate because once you experience it and the knowledge of the guides it is well worth it. The tour is only in Italian yet the guide was wonderful and... More

One of our goals when visiting Matera was to see this extraordinary piece of medieval art, painted on the walls of a cave in the middle of the countryside. This visit was a very special experience to us, as the frescoes were presented in a well thought-out and elaborated manner. The guide was very eloquent, passionate, with a profound knowledge... Great history lesson here. The frescoes have been well-restored. Our guide was top notch and the video was informative. Best part - learnt that the infamous apple was really not an apple! Well worth the trip - it's about 10 mins outside the city - set in a park (past a winery). Beautiful setting, plus you'll see cave dwellings up... More

Although a visit to the Crypt of the Original Sin starts out meeting the guide at gas station on the state road, everything else about the visit is extraordinary. After following the guide in your car to the cave site, there is a short walk down some stairs on uneven ground. The guide handed us a translation of what we... More

Booked an English tour some weeks before. Email from them that they had booked a large Italian group so the tour would now be in Italian so could we choose another time - English language options given. We re-booked but the tour was with an all Italian speaking group and was all in Italian. They gave us a written guide... More

This is an incredibly beautiful and enigmatic place. We visited February 2015 with our guide, Luigi from guida-Matera.it. He was wonderful. I've just written a kindle book entitled 'Matera'.
