To stroll endless maze of Sasso streets makes incredible experience. Accessible from many points. Classical and favorite point is from the balcony near the ticket office of Palombaro Lungo_water cistern from which you have amazing view. You will see houses dug into the calcarenitic rock itself where people lived till 1950s when the Italian government relocated the majority of people to modern city. It used to be poverty-stricken area now gradually improving but still remaining its charm and characteristic. There are churches, museums, restaurants and cafe to keep you entertained for at least half of the day.

Sassi Barisano is the upper part of unique Matera. It was developed after people learned they could cut limestone blocks for building their houses instead of digging the caves.
The whole area is absolutely mind blowing - allow at least one full day and one night. Walk as much you can over the area and admire terrific different view points.

As we enjoy wandering and exploring historic sites, we took another walk in the steep, narrow streets of Sasso Barisano, north of the San Giovanni Battista church. We wanted to find Casa Cava, a cultural center. We eventually found it, but it was closed. As we walked those streets, we tried to imagine how hard and uncomfortable it must have been to live in those dwellings, even one hundred years ago! It was a sobering experience.

The sassi continue to be interesting with a surprise around every corner and well placed cafes and art shops along the way. While they look like you will get lost there are dozens of ways back. Just pick out a landmark to get back to

This was the first part of Matera we visited. A tour group was ahead of us and kept to the main route. Do wander on your own through the narrow streets and spend time looking around you. There is a mix of old and unused houses where you can imagine the poverty and conditions people lived in, but there are also some which are occupied by businesses and you can see how they are currently used. Others are lived in and provide good insight into current life.

The Sassi of Matera are considered the oldest urban settlement in Europe. They are the epicenter of the Rupestrian – rock or cave dwelling – culture. This practice developed since prehistory along the Ionian section of the ancient Appian Way.
The Matera grew as the upper "Civita" and the lower "Piano" districts to form Matera's Old Town. Today they are known as the Caveoso and Barisano, and each has its own characteristic.
Barisano is the upper section. It contains many of the major attractions located in and around Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
As groups of prehistoric hunter-gatherers moved towards a more agricultural lifestyle, they settled on the high grounds overlooking the gorge. This became known as the Civita.
