We stopped for a walk in the old town of Matera. It was a seven- to eight-minute walk from the central station, the starting point of the Sassi di Matera sightseeing, and was crowded with tourists. On the way from here to the cathedral, there is a panoramic view of the cave dwellings of the Sasso Barisano area. The Palazzo Annunziata (Palace of the Annunciation) with its clock tower stands in front of the square.

Sitting on top of the Palombardo Lungo, a giant cistern that holds large amounts of water, The Piazza is an irregularly-shaped open space that houses the main Information center, and is limited on one side by the Biblioteca Provinciale, a large, two-storied building. Excavations on one side of the Piazza continue to uncover historical bindings. Stores, shops and restaurants also line the Piazza as does the Church of San Domenico.

We were disappointed that the underground cistern was not open in October of 2019 but understand the need to close it to do work on it to keep it in good condition.

Thai is a relatively large piazza in Matera. Plenty to do and see. It’s a great place to people watch. We are enjoying the Italian piazzas as they all different.

Impressive main square with plenty of varying attractions including museums and cafes together with interesting shops. A good place to sit in the shade with a cool drink and people watch with as many locals as tourists.

This is the area where heavy traffic is forbidden, it was gorgeous. A feast for the eyes and the ears! There was this older gentleman using a violin bow on a long handsaw, it had such and angelic quality to add to the entertainment of hundreds of people walking and talking.

We spent hours here visiting the churches, Palombaro Lungo and just generally wandering. The piazza is an odd shape and with things below street level, it is easy to miss things. The tourist information office is here as well. Like many other piazzas, there are fountains, churches, shops and cafes and of course people and Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the pulse of Matera. This has a couple of things the other piazzas don’t have such as - Chiesa Santo Spirito, a rupestrian church built 8th or 9th century, (free admittance) and the 16th century, Palombaro Lungo, (entry fee required) access to both of these sites are through a gate in the piazza and down steps.

The two favourite churches below were simple but beautiful -

Built 1230, the façade of Chiesa e convento di San Domenico, features four figures around a rose window, with the Archangel Michael at the top.

Chiesa di Mater Domini, built by the Knights of Malta, in 1680. The exterior is very unusual but beautiful, with external steps up to the small bell tower. The interior is very austere and tiny.

Two fountains in the piazza - The very grand, Fontana Ferdinandea, built 1832. There is also a large circular fountain in front of the18th century Palazzo dell’Annunziata.

A Monument to the Fallen of the First World War, inaugurated in 1926. This has three columns flanked by two statues.

We had lunch here nearly every day, usually a salad, which was excellent value for money. Accessible by a lift. The food was very nice, service was always very prompt and courteous. Worth a visit to take photos.

Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the central square of Matera. It's a starting point for exploring this amazing town.
There're several attractions around it:
- the entrance to Sassi area,
- Palombaro Lungo water cistern,
- one of the oldest rock Churches,
- Luigi Guerricchio Belvedere (the absolute best view point of Sassi),
- Annunciation Palace (former Monastery, now a public space),
- local market with stalls (cheese, olives, salami, local products,...),
- street performers,
- dozens of bars and restaurants around.
