Overlooked by the Cathedral of Vallencia which happens to be right next to it. This Basilica is just beautiful. Its only open when a service is on which is 2-3 times a week. It you are at Plaza De La Virgen and this Basilica happens to be open take a look inside it is just breathtaking. The Basilica is very decorative with many paintings and ornaments it was a great surprise visiting here while I was visiting Plaza De La Virgen.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Dispossessed, unlike the previous churches and monasteries of Valencia, was built not by rebuilding the previous churches, but from scratch between 1652 and 1667. The modest facade is built in the Late Renaissance style with four large gates for pilgrims. The interior, on the contrary, was already built in the style of the triumphant Baroque at that time. The basilica has an unusual oval shape, and on both sides of the altar above the porticos there are two balconies, confirming the thesis of the theatrical character of the Baroque. Stucco molding on the walls and brown marble pilasters add luxury to the interior. The splendor of the basilica is emphasized by the frescoes of the dome, made by Antonio Palomino, a court artist who received the nickname "Spanish Vasari" because of his book with biographies of Spanish artists. The dome creates the illusion of a cycle of saints and angels rising up to heaven. In the center of the altar is naturally the Mother of God. The wits of Valencia called her Geperudeta- Hunchbacked because of the head bent towards the parishioners.

The Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken (Real Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados) was built in the 17th century. It's not all that large, but has a fabulous large painted dome. Well worth ducking in for a look!

On our recent annual vacation to Alicante we took in a visit to Valencia some 2hrs by car on the Spainish autoroute, from Alicante to Valencia €20 in tolls
We parked at the Marina & got a taxi to the “ Centro Historico” or Old Town area with its amazing architecture & relaxing bars it’s a great place to relax in the sun & enjoy great food & drink.
1st stop was the Plaza de la Virgen & Palau de la Generalitat or Government Palace followed by a walk around the many narrow streets with interesting shops & small public parks. After we took a walk back to the Marina area via the “ Jardins del Turia “ with fantastic fountains & ponds , the walk was approx 2hrs but there was a lovely ice cream bar along the way.
Strongly recommend a visit & maybe spend an evening in one of the many hotels.
Happy travels

Particular Church, to central plant with asymmetric dome located right in the main square of Valencia. It's the usual background of all major cultural and religious events that take place in the city. Honestly I found very uninteresting when compared to other churches of Valencia. It's worth visiting because it's right downtown, but you should not have high expectations and above all, you must be aware that if you have little time go anywhere else. @ gargio76

Beautiful church with a stunning altar and image of the Virgin, located on the magnificent Plaza de la Virgen. Stop in for some quiet contemplation and a break from the hustle and bustle of town.

This is probably my second european cathedral visit (1st in Spain), and my first basilica. The artwork in the dome and the alcoves was absolutely beautiful.

Sung mass at 13.00 is worth attending. Beautiful building which is free to enter (unlike the cathedral). Beautiful ceiling worth seeing.

My wife and I had a short stop off in Valencia whilst on a TUI cruiser and enjoyed the visit. The Basilica is free to enter and you can see some interesting architecture whilst in there. Located next to the Cathedral in the Virgin Square, the building is quite diminutive and basic from outside, but inside there are a lot of beautiful decoration and amazing tranquillity.

This is a most beautiful basilica which is quite near the main Cathedral. Although it is much smaller than the Cathedral it is very beautiful and mass is said at all hours, We visited the second time and heard mass at around 7.30pm
