There is a fascinating history pertaining to this imposing monument.

Built in 1946 as a monument to commemorate the Fallen, it was modelled on an older gate called Puerta del Real that was demolished in 1848 with the city walls and all gates other than two.

But there was an older gate called Puerta del Mar that was constructed in the 1350s along with the walls. It was so called because it led to the sea.

After numerous years the current monument was renamed Puerta de la Mar. Its central aperture is arched and has the conserved cross. On each side the openings are flat.

This wonderfully designed gate construction is a re-build and represents one of the former city wall gates. Erected in 1946 the 'Gateway to the Sea' is a pretty impressive monument, made even more so by the addition of the central cross representing those who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War. It stands on a roundabout now in Plaza Porta de la Mar and is certainly a strong feature within Valencia.

This was in the past the Easten City Gate towards the harbor, but it has now been upgraded to a Monument. It is located on a roundabout surrounded by small parks. It's a nice place to relax for a moment. Take also a look at the beautiful buildings adjacent to this area.

Wandering around the wonderful El Pla Del Remei District I chanced upon this amazing gateway and arch and what a great find.
This gate is a direct copy of a gate that was demolished in 1868 ,this gate was known as the Old Sea Gate ,this newer gate is known as Puerta De La Mar ( Gate To The Sea ) and was constructed in 1946 to honour the fallen of the Spanish Civil War ( 1936-1939 ) ,it's a wonderful looking gate and arch ,there are four beautiful statue's located on each corner of the gate plus two emblematic bat statue's ,symbol of this city ,these statue's are the work of renowned sculptor Vicente Navarro Romero ,it's such a great looking and highly photogenic gate and arch and easy to locate on Placa De La Porta De La Mar and well worth checking out if you're in the area.

The name so I am told means Gate to the Sea, although it is quite far from it. It is though a nice archway on a roundabout in the city - worth a look if you are in the area, but not worth a special trip.

As my accommodation was quite close, I crossed this plaza or walked around it several times each day. Yet, it has its own appeal and more than once I caught myself standing still appreciating the calm of the plaza and the drone of cars passing by.
