Top ways to experience Mercado de San Antón and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

    Tapas with the locals
I was a tourist in town and was told this is where the locals go and not so many tourists. It proved to be true. It is located on the second floor of a Super Market and there is a rooftop bar above it. Seating is limited, but you can share tables and eventually find seats. It is not as big as Mercado San Miguel, but it is definitely less expensive and a lighter less chaotic atmosphere. They have all different types of Tapas including Paella (which was incredible), greek bites, sushi, desserts, seafood, etc... The first floor of the super market as you enter also has really good gelato which we really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend coming here. The people were really nice and welcoming.

Fun trip out and great food
The Mercado San Anton is made up of a supermarket, fresh market, food stalls and a restaurant/rooftop bar. I shopped here every day for 7 months while I was living in the area. The supermarket (it is a Supercor) is great with meat and fish counters with fresh produce and everything else needed for a weekly shop. Above the supermarket there is a fresh market with cheese stalls, meat stands, fresh bread etc - perhaps too expensive for daily goods but great quality and fun to go around. Next there is a floor dedicated to different food stands; lots of spanish wine and tapas stands but also chinese stalls, italian, french etc - it's great fun to go around and taste different plates at different stalls. Lastly at the top there is a rooftop bar with a few restaurants and bars. It is open from the morning until late at night and there are views over Chueca (the neighbourhood). You can sit inside or outside to have lunch, supper, drinks, snacks etc. Food-wise there are lots of options to share, such as tacos, prawn tempura, croquetas and then more substantial courses for mains. There are lots of cocktails on offer, those which I tried were great, and many Spanish wines. Highly recommend, not as busy/crowded or expensive as some of the other rooftop bars in Madrid but just as fun.

    Best sangria! Great!
Even if we have been there to as for some food at 23:00 they accepted us and looked after us very well even if we were the only two person in the entire restaurant and they were closing. Food is delicious, staff very attentive and professional. We have been there twice in a week. I never go back somewhere to eat when I’m on holiday because I think I should always try something new but it worth it! BEDT SANGRIA EVER!

Grerat place to try different foods, lots of tapas. Restaurant on the top floor gets crowded pretty fast. Bottom floor has a great selection of hams and cheeses, and mistura ice cream which was great.

The Italian place was great, and the fish place on the 2nd floor too. Lots of people, plenty of places to sit and chat!

We came on a Saturday and the market was full of locals enjoying themselves. On the main floor there are a number of food stalls which you can take away from and sit at a table if you can find a space - you may have to share. We had tea and cake from Mma Framboise but you could have a beer, a glass of wine, a burger etc. There are more food places upstairs as well as a restaurant at roof level.

Try other markets or go for a specialized and focused restaurant. We went there trying to substitute the busy-ness of the more marketed mercado San Miguel. This one is at the same price level and the quality I’d say is a notch below. We went to the more Spanish/local spot in the market. Ordered many things and again, we’ve had better.

The manager of the level 1 fish corner dragged me over and promised a deal. TERRIBLE FOOD. Made me sick. I returned the platter barely eaten and he offered a new set of food, then he left the premises. This new food was just as bad. Then the server who has left tried to charge me for everything. Horrible horrible horrible. Pay attention to the negative reviews here. This is a terrible tourist trap.

We ended up going for a walk in Madrid and visited the Mercado San Anton. On the roof (azotea) there is a great restaurant with great views. The food is excellent and the service is very friendly. Another little hidden gem to visit if you are in Madrid

Website says they close at midnight on Monday. We arrived at 6:45pm and 75% of the stalls were closed and locked up, empty. Maybe this is good on the weekends, but this was a big disappointment. Mercado San Miguel is more fun with more options for eating on-site. The place we did eat was amazing... the station #25 "Chuka Sando", bao bao buns with fried chicken or pork belly...definitely try that place!

Mercado de San Anton was relatively small and a mix of tapa's bars and food sellers. All looked reasonable quality and busy and worth a visit. The area around the market was quite interesting and a little different

A smaller market located in the Barrio de Chueca. At the entrance is a Nut vendor (so many different varieties) with a good size fruits and vegetable stand as you start the path.

A couple of butcher and Jambon stands as well, fish monger & restaurant. In the middle is a cafe that looked to have a nice selection of pastries and desserts.
A small restaurant (Korean) was tucked away in the corner.

Rooftop seating is also available. Although not the biggest Mercado, it covers most of the necessities.

I lived in Madrid for a year and spent a lot of time here. It is a must visit spot if you are a foodie visiting Madrid. Best to arrive when you are hungry and sample something from each stall, from delicious croquetas to fantastic sushi! The Korean fried chicken at the Korean stand is delicious too. Wash everything done with a glass of crisp white wine. Then head up to the roof top and sample the cocktails and enjoy the relaxed Madrid lifestyle! If you get hungry order more food on the rooftop, which is also delicious!

We arrived around 8pm but only the pretty impressive cheese and meat counter was open and the supermarket. Seems to be some construction work going on. You can however see this could be buzzy and busy. Enjoyed drinks and tapas on the roof terrace which was great.
