Everytime I pass through Madrid, visiting Calle Mayor has been a most. Not that I ever thought much about it, but I always try to visit the 0 mile mark of Madrid and it so happens that this street is what it is: the old major landmark street of the centre of the city. A place for all tourists to visit, with all sorts of beautiful shops, with Plaza Mayor alongside part of it, it runs from Puerta de Sol to the corner of the Cathedral of Almudena (next to the palace). It is such a lovely and lively route to walk through.

The most beautiful street in Madrid. Collect all the quintessence of this city. Buildings with specific architecture, restaurants with flavors from other times, chic shops and street food.
You can also walk on the side streets. You will be surprised what you will discover.

Just shops and few restaurants.
Not worth the time by itself. Just pass it by to plaza mayor.
Very crowded.

Calle Mayor is one of the main streets in Madrid, it connects Plaza del Sol with the Palacio Real and Almudena Cathedral, with Plaza de San Miguel and Plaza Mayor in between. It was created in the Middle Ages. Essential street to visit due to the number and variety of shops, squares, restaurants, bars.

As we walked down Calle Mayor my husband Dave noticed several policemen holding up traffic on the narrow street and suggested we wait thinking some famous personage was about to appear. Instead we heard the bleating and bell ringing of hundreds of sheep led by their shepherds as they passed through the street right in front of us! We were delighted to see this “Running of the Sheep” that included drummers, an occasional horn or two and the seemingly endless clanging sheep’s bells, along with a few huge oxen pulling carts filled with children. Watchful shepherds with their classic crooks completed this wonderful parade. These unexpected colloquial events are what I love most about travel.

Calle Mayor is one of the central arteries of Madrid. Busy, noisy, but with some notable sights and amazing Plaza Mayor as its central point. Plaza de la Villa is a lovely spot with beautiful architecture, Mercado San Miguel is also along the way as well as Mercado San Anton. Plenty of cafes, restaurants, artisan shops and overload of tacky souvenirs on every corner.

This street is always busy, but has some nice shops and a few cafes / restaurants. Just off it is the Plaza Major.

The Calle Mayor runs from Sol to the Cathedral and is an interesting walk. Just off it, is the Plaza Mayor, the Mercado San Miguel and the Plaza de la Villa with the oldest buildings in Madrid. This street is a gateway to old Madrid. There are some wonderful bakeries both near Sol and down the Cathedral end. There are souvenir shops in abundance but do note if you want souvenirs, buy at shops the cathedral end as they offer the same merchandise several dollars cheaper than those near the Plaza Mayor or Sol. There is a great Olive oil and Spanish spice shop about no 44, opposite the Mercado. It is safe for strolling night and day.

Another main street of Madrid, leading from Puerta del Sol (with the Bear and the Strawberry Tree) to Catedral de la Almudena and the Royal Palace, with a lot of restaurants, shops and pretty old buildings. It passes close to Plaza Mayor (expensive restaurants and cafeterias) and Mercado de San Miguel where you can have a quick tapas meal.

Calle Mayor (Main Street) connects Catedral de la Almudena with Puerto Del Sol, via Plaza Mayor in the historic centre of Madrid. This is a busy street lined with shops, restaurants, bars that passes some interesting attractions and places to spend time in between these two important locations in Madrid.

During our recent visit, we enjoyed several worthy food stops along Calle Mayor including the historic pasteleria called La Mallorquina at Puerto del Sol as well as Chocolateria San Gines, the 24-hour cafe famed for their churros con chocolate. A fun place to try Jamon Iberico can be found at Museum de Jamon near Plaza Mayor. Lastly, Mercado de San Miguel, which is just west of Plaza Mayor. This is a great stop for sampling a range of tapas and light bites in Madrid.

An obvious stop along Calle Mayor is the important Plaza Mayor. Numerous other restaurants, shops, palaces and nice buildings line the street until you reach Catedral de la Almudena. Here you find one of the most interesting cathedral attractions in Madrid as well as the Royal Palace, another must-see attraction for many visiting the city.
