    Bonita fuente

Fuente De Los Galapagos is yet another beautiful fountain to be found in Parque Del Retiro.
Walking around this beautiful park you come across so many interesting statues and things of interest and this fountain certainly caught my eye.
Commissioned by Ferdinand VII in honour of the first birthday of Pricess Isabella, it's a beautiful piece of architecture, there's three fairies offering gifts,4 children riding dolphins, a couple of frogs and a couple of tortoises, all beautifully detailed, this beautiful fountain is very photogenic and makes for some great photographic opportunities and if your planning a visit to Retiro Park most definitely well worth checking out.

Fuente de los Galapagos is a beautiful fountain. It is in a lovely spot in Parque del Retiro. We had no idea what all the different sculptures meant until we looked it up. Very interesting indeed. It was built in early 19th century by Ferdinand VII to commemorate the first anniversary of the birth of Princess Isabella, who later became Queen. Three fairies are offering gifts to the princess. The dolphins ridden by four children are associated with intelligence, wisdom and prudence; the marine elements represent fertility, as water is the source of all life, and the Galápagos tortoises symbolise longevity. The tortoises also give the fountain its name. Additionally the fountain also supplied water to the locals. The park itself belonged to the royals, until it was given to the public in the late 19th century. Worth a special visit!

This fountain went up in 1832 to commemorate the first birthday of Princess Isabella, who became Isabella II. Though the figures of cherubs riding dolphins and those of frogs and turtles spouting water would likely delight a young child as much as they fascinated me, allegory runs rampant here. The dolphins represent intelligence, wisdom and prudence; marine details, fertility; and Galapagos tortoises, longevity. All seem quite fitting for a birthday tribute.

I came upon this fountain while exploring Parque del Retiro, where the granite and limestone creation stands in the Nicaragua roundabout near the northern end of the big lake. Red flowers surrounded its basin on that hot August day and the water flowed. I stood there for a while, enjoying a slight -- very slight -- cooling effect.

Fuente de los Galapagos has only been in the park since 1879. It went up first in the Red de San Luis, where it was a public water supply. Those entering or exiting the park via Calle de Alcala or Plaza de la Independencia will be quite near the fountain.

Fuente de los Galápagos (Fountain of the Turtles) also called Fuente de Isabel II, is a beautiful fountain located at Plaza de Nicaragua on the north-west side of the famous Retiro Park. The fountain is designed by Francisco Javier de Marietegui and sculpted in granite and limestone by José Tomás. The fountain was inaugurated in 1832 to celebrate the birth of Princess and later Queen Isabel II. The fountain consist of an upper shell-shaped spout on a cup supported by a palm shaped column. At the feet of this column are four children, each sitting on a dolphin. Below the children are three steps and at the level of the second step are two turtles and two frogs, facing all in a different direction. The fountain is named after these turtles. The fountain was originally placed at Red de San Luis, near the Gran Via and served as a public water supply from 1839 till 1858. In 1868 the fountain was moved to Plaza de Santa Ana and in 1879 it was relocated to its current location at Plaza de Nicaragua at Retiro Park, near Puerta de Alcala and the large pond in the park.
When we visited the Retiro Park in May 2014, the fountain was not operational. I found pictures of the working fountain and normally there is water spouting out of the top shell, the dolphins the turtles and frogs. It would be a marvelous sight to see the fountain spouting water.
There is also another beautiful fountain in the south-west of Retiro Park called Fuente de la Alcachofa (Artichoke Fountain) which is a beautiful Baroque fountain located on the Plaza de la Republica de Honduras.
