The area

Neighborhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

It's not worth going to eat meat.
A very limited meat menu, they are sold as a specialist and there is almost no choice.
The meat is nothing out of this world. The most exclusive thing about the high loin being completely bloody was not due to a lack of stitching, but rather the fact that the meat had a quantity of water that was almost swimming in it.
I don't think it's worth recommending.

This crowded street of bars and restaurants is located in the old quarter of letters. Several great names in literature have stayed here. Some quotes from these famous figures are noted on the floor. Now the street has become much more popular and littered with people in the evening.

Fun street in Barrio de las Letras. The narrow street is lined with elegant of apartments with attractive wrought-iron balcony railings, and lots of pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants. The place comes alive especially at night.

Calle de las Huertas provided a handy reference point and arterial for us when walking around this area. Some great restaurants, shops and cafes too and a nice mix of locals and tourists. I never felt unsafe, but didn't go out very late at night- much nicer to walk around early in the morning. There are inscriptions in Spanish along the road from some of the many playwrights and authors that lived in the area.

Located in the wonderful El Barrio De Las Letras ( The Literary Quarter ) is Calle De Las Huertas ,this area was originally a group of farms hence the name Huertas which translates as farms ,as Madrid grew in importance this group of farms was incorporated into the growing city of Madrid and the neighbourhood was a particularly popular area for poets, writers and playwrights from were we get the adopted name El Barrio De Las Letras.
Calle De Las Huertas is a superb street packed with pubs, bars and restaurants, La Colonial de Huertas, Taberna Maceiras,El Patio De La Tapas,La Fidula,Trocha,La Lupe,Bar Toulouse Lautrec and many many more eating and drinking establishments makes this a wonderful and vibrant street and area to visit day or night .
A great street, a wonderful neighbourhood, well worth checking out if your in the area .

The Calle de las Huertas is close to the Paseo del Prado and this street has at least a dozen old traditional restaurants where one can eat well and try the traditional food of Madrid.

This street has many bars and restaurants with every choice imaginable. It was also where my hostel was situated so it was a prime location for me within a five minute walk of Anton Martin metro station and just 10 minutes to all the bright lights of Madrid city centre. Although it is a beautiful pedestrianised street it does get quite dark in the evenings due to the built up area but at no time did I feel threatened as some people have remarked. It is what you make of it and I did not hear of anything untowards happening here.

Busy pedestrianised street. Lots of bars and little plazas opening off it. Saw some lively street entertainment. Bars all looked good, better option than crowded over touristy Plaza Santa Ana.

We walked this street,Calle de las Huertas, on our way to breakfast; from Puerta del Sol to near the Prado. It was early on a Sunday morning. No one was up yet. It's a beautiful street. On the sidewalk are literary quotes. Also in this direction it is downhill.
