Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

No 1 Gran Via
Feb 2020
Gran Via is Madrid’s most famous street and this is the building that has prime position and the prestigious address of No 1 Gran Via.
From the front, the slender columns and curved façade make it look a lot like a tall, tiered white wedding cake.
Building the Gran Via was a massive project. Behind the work, was a grand vision for a new, modern thoroughfare that would link the different parts of Madrid and would replace the maze of old, small streets that had existed before. Construction started in 1910 and finished 19 years later but not before more than 300 streets and buildings were demolished to make way for it.
It was out with the old and in with the new. The Grassy Building was one of a wave of elegant new buildings and was built well before the street itself was finished. It’s monumental appearance, along with The Metropolis Building was to set the tone for the rest of the Gran Via. Built in 1916, it was originally designed as sumptuous apartments. Today it is occupied by Grassy Jewellery so you can go inside if you want to see the interior. There is also a clock museum in the basement.
It is easy to spot because of the large ‘Rolex’ sign on the front.

Beautiful building.

Somewhat overlooked as this building is adjacent to the stunning Edificio Metropolis, Edificio Grassy is no less beautiful ,architect Eladio Laredo was very sympathetic in his approach to the construction of Edificio Grassy which was constructed between 1916 - 1917 ,the beautiful building easily blends in with the landmark buildings along Gran Via and Calle De Alcala, my twin brother Stephen and I were wandering down Gran Via and taking in the stunning architecture and Edificio Grassy is most certainly one of the most eye catching building along Gran Via.
Well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Madrid.

Another stunning piece of architecture.

Located practically next door to the magnificent Edificio Metropolis, Edificio Grassy is yet another magnificent and iconic piece of architecture.
The way this building effortlessly blends in with the amazing architecture along Gran Via is testament to the ingenuity of the architects who designed this area.
One of the complete joys of walking down Gran Via is the fact that you can really take in the beautiful architecture, Edificio Grassy with its huge Rolex signage is most definitely one of the standout buildings here and makes for some great photographic opportunities and is most definitely well worth checking out.

Interesting building
May 2018 • Family
Edificio Grassy is an impressive building at the eastern end of Gran Via. Often overshadowed by the neighboring Edificio Metropolis, it is one among many beautiful sites along Madrid's busiest street. Unfortunately it is not open to the public.

More known as Rolex building
Apr 2018 • Couples
The building is located at the very beginning of Gran Via. It was built between 1916 and 1917 on a triangular piece of land, in the same way as the Edificio Metropolis next to it.

A fun thing to do when walking in the Gran Via area of Madrid is to gaze at the buildings some of them are real standouts.

Edificio Grassy has an almost gateau like topping. It is noticeable with the Rolex crown sign.

An Elegant Building
Dec 2017 • Couples
The Edificio Grassy is found at one end of the very busy Gran Via Street. Its architecture calls attention to it because it is so very different from other buildings on that street. It is quite beautiful.
