With our 11 and 7 year old kids in mind, we booked two scavenger-hunt style tours with Almu: the Prado and the city of Madrid. They were both highly enjoyable and informative. Almu spoke directly to the kids, and allowed time for questions and interactions - she has so much art history knowledge, and the know-how to deliver the information in a way that captures the kids’ imagination and attention. Everyone in my family came away with deeper appreciation and understanding. All of these things combined absolutely made this worth our while, and we would do it again in a heartbeat!

My family of four booked a children's tour of the Prado Musuem with Almudena and we were thankful for all that we learned during the tour. Almudena made the tour interesting (two kids = 9 and 11 y.o.) stayed interested during the entire tour (about 2 1/2 hours), which is not a small feat. In addition to showing us the important pieces, Almudena taught us how to look at art in a unique way - type of paint used, how to tell if women are married in a painting, why paintings are important, etc.. The tour was very insightful and we would highly recommend for families considering a tour of the Prado.

We took the children-focused Prado tour with Almudena and it was an absolute hit for all our family. Almu treated our girls (7y and 11y) as the main guests and successfully involved them in her storytelling. They were mesmerized and eager to talk to her - asking questions and sharing whatever knowledge they had on random subjects ;) My husband and I learned a lot interesting facts as well and from now on we will definitely look at paintings with more understanding and curiosity. We also had interesting discussions with Almu on various historical topics.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour and Almudena as your guide to Spanish culture, art and history. She is a true professional - our email communication before the tour was swift and helpful. She made a significant effort to make the tour as customised for us as possible.
My kids want to do it again :)

My wife and I first encountered Almudena in November of 2015 and reviewed our grateful impressions then. We just returned for an even more detailed and insightful series of her tours in: the National Archaeological, the Prado, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums in Madrid. One of many "who knew it" features was the incredible detail (e.g. thread in clothing, capillaries in the eyes, the legs of a fly). Another was the technological advance in toolmaking (e.g. molding an axe from liquid metal instead of carving it). Almudena is by far the best tour guide we've met in our 54 years of travel: she converts her Ph.D. in art history to clear, conversational insights for any who take her tours.

We had a family tour of the Prado with Almu. My boys are under 10 and they normally cannot stand more than 15 minutes in a museum. However, Almu managed to keep them entertained for 2.5 hours. We hit all the major attractions, learned a ton and everyone was happy. It’s the best way to visit the Prado - definitely recommend it!

This was the highlight of our trip to Madrid and I highly recommend for families with kids who want to introduce them to the wonders of the Prado. We are a family of four, with two children ages 12 and 7. Almu was a pro at engaging the kids for 2.5 hours--they were mesmerized and never once complained about being tired! I was amazed that my 7 year-old daughter, in particular, learned so much about Spanish history and culture that she recognized symbols and religious stories in other sites across Spain. This is absolutely worth every penny for families who want a fun and educational experience at the Prado.

The Spanish Civil War history tour of Madrid is fantastic and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to learn about Madrid during that period, no matter what level of existing knowledge you already have. I had done some wider reading some months beforehand but was still blown away by Almu's expert knowledge and by how much her tour really brought the history to life.

Seeing first hand where the International Brigades fought during the Battle for Madrid (the scars of war still showing on the buildings) could have easily been enough of a tour in itself, but it covered much more than that. I very much enjoyed learning about the wider social history leading up to the civil war and what the city was like during that period through Almu's impressive collection of photographs and personal stories from those who were there.

I was also really grateful for how accommodating Almu was, especially as it was awful weather in Madrid that day and I had only got in touch to arrange a tour a couple of days previously. Her passion for the history is infectious and was for me what made the tour not only quite powerful but also enjoyable and actually quite motivating. I came away wanting to learn much more and Almu was keen to point me in the right direction for further reading.

Could not recommend this tour enough.

The Prado can be an overwhelming place to visit. We decided to take a private tour with Almudena Cros. She is an excellent guide, whose English is very good and is very helpful even before the tour, i.e. when and how to get tickets, etc. She will tailor the tour to your interests but we left it to her regarding what to see. She does not just help you see what you never would see on your own in a particular painting, but she ties many of the paintings together in terms of style and history. Highly recommend.

I took this seminar/tour because I am researching memory of the Spanich Civil War and Franco's dictatorship for a school project. Almudena took us to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Callao and Ciudad Universitaria, where she showed us the specific places where significant events took place yet are not remembered for such; events that greatly and profoundly impacted those living through those times yet seems to have been ignored in a way. Connecting the histories of Spain's civil war to the world wars and other international conflicts, Almudena shows a real valuable way of engaging with the history of the city.
Your questions will get an answer that has been subject to extensive thought and study. Almudena's personality is uniquely fun and friendly; she is contageously passionate and always respectful so don't fear to ask as you travel the mysterious path of the city's memory.

Dear noramU5911SB, Thank you for taking our Spanish Civil War tour in Madrid and for sharing your impressions with the rest of the community in TripAdvisor. This is such an important tour to take because of what you point out in your review: most of the history is ignored. As a committed activist for Historical Memory and a professional historian, this tour is particularly close to our heart. Despite other commercial companies imitating us and offering a filtered view, we are the real deal and have fist-hand knowledge which is simply impossible to copy. Thank you for choosing us for your school project and do not hesitate to write to us with any questions. Across Madrid Team.

My wife and I were fortunate to spend an afternoon and early evening with Almu, first visiting the Prado Museum, followed by a tapas tour. Touring with Almu, especially when she's discussing art, culture and history, one cannot help but appreciate the knowledge, passion and exuberance she exhibits. Almu was able to provide clear and helpful insight into the artists' background, as well as the meaning and significance of their paintings. Before, during and after our tour Almu provided us with recommendations for additional touring and additional information regarding what we had seen at the Prado. She made our time with her - which was all too brief - informative, enjoyable and memorable. We highly recommend Almu to anyone interested in learning more about Spain.
