Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Madrid. It is located in the Austrian historic district. The outside is nice, but the inside is magnificent! It has many frescoes, paintings and elaborated stained glass windows. The dome and the tabernacle is also very solemn.

It truly reminded me of a beacon on the outside, but it was more lovely on the inside! If you have already visited the Reina Sofia Museum, to admire the sculpture of Luis Salvador Carmona, "The Faith", then make a stop here, to add another piece of his to your memories. It's "Cristo de la Fe y del Perdón" and you will see it either as the center piece or in one of the alters.

A beautiful church. Worth stopping in to see, especially if you are in the area to see the palace. Multiple sections to see, make sure to walk completely around the building.

You are in a catholic country so expect a lot of gold and side alters each dedicated to a different saint. Good atmosphere in which to pray and meditate.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a wedding at this beautiful church and just want to tell travellers how lovely it is. There are some marvellous paintings and the ceiling is amazing - it's a very high ceiling and quite wonderful. Definitely worth a visit, if not for a wedding!

The Basilica de San Miguel is a nice little church. Free entrance. Nice interior and decorations. Not many visitors when we were there.

This is a gorgeous church, from the fine convex façade to the ornateness that awaits within. It’s a grand vista from the back down the nave to the decorative altar area.

The frescoed cupola is gorgeous. Close to the entrance is a large beautifully carved chamber. Also here were two large silver coloured decorated display structures. They may have been related to the forthcoming Easter season celebrations.

My twin brother Stephen and I were exploring around this area of the city when we passed Basilica De San Miguel, viewed this church many times on previous holidays to Madrid and it still impresses me.
Basilica De San Miguel ( St Michaels Church ) was constructed between 1739-1745 from designs from architect Santiago Bonavia ,a beautiful piece of architecture, the facade is superb ,on this visit I never ventured inside the church but I have on previous visits, its lovely but on this occasion I was content with taking some photos of the exterior before moving on, its a church easy to locate along Calle San Justo and well worth checking out if you're in the area.

This is a beautiful church, it’s easy to walk past this little church but well worth popping inside to have a look. It’s not alway open but if it is it’s a real treat.
