Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Our group of 4 purchased tickets only to be turned away minutes later. Security was argumentative and essentially told us it's our fault and turned us away. I can't review the museum because we were not able to enter with our tickets, I can only review how terribly we were treated.

Ok don’t miss this if you’re interested in History of the Catholic Church in Madrid. Beautiful altar pieces and magnificent vestments plus manuscripts. Easily viewable in 1 to 2 hours plus the ability to climb the tower and see the city scape and view of royal palace from above is totally worthwhile. The climb also allows you proximity to the oversized statues of saints perched on top.

Well worth the visit. There's plenty to see. You can walk around the roof top .the statues are fantastic to see. There's a lift to the top. You can spend about two hrs there. It is across from the palace.it costs 6 euros pp. Seniors and large families gets discount.

The museum had some amazing pieces in it and I'm not much of a museum person. We mostly did it b/c for €6 you get museum, dome for panoramic views, and then entrance into cathedral itself. This entrance is hidden in corner on palace side so I don't think people see it. Until we got down to cathedral we were mostly alone. It was a beautiful afternoon and the views from the dome were amazing...so glad we did it. Well worth the €6. If u just do the cathedral (entrance on other side of building) it's a suggested donation...I think a Euro or 2.

Access to the cathedral is free although you are encouraged to make a donation. Step inside and look up - the ceiling decorations are not at all what you expect of it. The decor is modern and colourful, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Thank you for your opinion about the cathedral. For the next time, we'd like to invite you for visiting: the chapterhouse, the sacristy, the museum and the panoramic views of the city from the dome.

This is a great short visit after visiting the palace. This cathedral has a great history only being finished in the early 1990's. We have visited many cathedrals in Europe however none that are so recently completed. You will notice as you walk through the doors. The ceiling decorations and stained glass are very modern. This is worth the entry fee to see a unique and beautiful cathedral in Europe. Do not miss this stop even if you are tired after the visit of the palace. The crypt is interesting as well.

Almudena comes from Almudayna that in Arab means Citadel.
The Modern Stain Glass Art makes the perfect combination for this 1883 jewel. One of the most interesting cripta. Located in the middle of the city just in front of the Royal Palace is a must visit in your Old Madrid Tour.
We used the hop on hop off buses. Then walk around Sabatinnis gardens and later visit the beautiful Cathedral.
Secret Tip: just a few blocks from the Royal palace you will find an amazing restaurant “La MI Venta” where tapas, olive oil, Spanish wine and other surprises will make your day!

You'd think at my age, if you've seen 1 cathnedral, you've seen them all, but you'd be wrong. This cathedral took years to build and it blends the old style with a modern style, in many different mediums; bronzes, stain glass and wood, to name a few. It was dedicated by Pope John Paul (one of my favorite Pope's), and situated right outside the gates of the Palace, which makes for a terrific compact day of sightseeing in Madrid!

Lovely, peaceful building with breathtaking views of Madrid from the dome somewhat spoiled by the attitude of the member of staff on the ticket desk. As we approached the ticket desk he was talking to a colleague and ignoring our party. I smiled and said hello but he continued to talk to his colleague. When he turned he said 'Hola! Good Morning!' I thought that he was just being pleasant or replying to my greeting but I soon worked out that he was being sarcastic as he continued 'SAY GOOD MORNING AT LEAST PLEASE!' in a very aggressive tone. I replied that I had already done so but he just tutted and said 'well I didn't hear you!' If it wasn't for the fact that I was caught off guard and was embarrassed because there was another party following us in, I would have told him that the reason he hadn't heard me was because he was too busy ignoring me!!
Other than this horrible greeting, the building was beautiful and the views were stunning if you can climb up to the top of the dome (well worth the effort).
I would recommend a visit just hope that the 'gentleman' that served us has a day off!! Alternatively, make sure that you yell 'GOOD MORNING!! HOLA!! BUENOS DIAS!!' at the top of your voice as you approach the ticket desk.

Overall, the museum and church grounds are beautiful. As I entered the museum on Monday morning (16 November) , I asked for directions for the toilet before I began the tour. I had difficulty understanding the directions the employee was giving me, and this seemed to anger him. I was trying to speak Spanish, but the employee became very nasty and aggravated and at one point started making patronizing comments about me to another visitor just because I was not understanding where to go. I never thought I would walk into a sacred place of worship and get yelled at and humiliated because I was not able to understand where the restrooms were located.
