The Rick Steve's travel book we used to plan our trip described Stephen Drake-Jones as an "eccentric British expat" and that was all I needed to know to find him in the public plaza to meet up for our tour :). We did 'Hemmingway's Madrid' which gave us lots of information about Hemmingway during his periods of time living in Madrid. I think that any subject tour offered would provide what I valued most - walking around the city easily without needing to continually reference a map, learning about the city and it's history conversationally, visiting interesting establishments, eating tapas I would not have ordered on my own that were delicious, and being able to ask lots of questions from someone who speaks my language, knows the city well, and enjoys giving advice. I highly recommend Stephen Drake-Jones as a tour guide. I would absolutely use him again for a different subject tour when traveling to Madrid in the future. Communication booking the tour and payment were both easy.

I was able to take the Hemingway Tour on my recent Madrid visit and was so grateful to have found the resource that is Mr. Drake-Jones that I immediately booked him for the "Death in the Afternoon" Tour at his next availability. Both tours exceeded expectations and were the highlights of my trip. I highly recommend anything that the Wellington Society of Madrid has to offer.

My husband and I spent a delightful afternoon with Stephen in early December on the Spanish constitution day holiday. The city was crowded and decked out for Christmas, and we met up with Stephen at noon at Plaza Santa Ana to start our day with a history lesson on Hemingway at the bar he frequented during his first tour as a war correspondent.

The afternoon progressed with tapas, wine, famous (and not as famous) statues, more tapas, more wine, Mickey Mouse’s precursor, murder sites… all explained by a gifted storyteller. Stephen is a wealth of knowledge and the best kind of teacher/guide. He made sure we were following along, answered all of our questions, and showed us a picture of Madrid we would never have gotten from a guide book.

I’d recommend to anyone an afternoon stroll with Stephen. Cheers!

Stephen Drake was incredible. He was accommodating as a historian and a wine aficionado and we toured Francisco De Goya's most important works and life with wine tasting and Tapas. His knowledge and storytelling is unmatched and he enjoyed being with the history as much as we did. I would highly recommend spending time with him and purchasing his book that is soon to come out.

Mr Drake-Jones, Chairman of the Wellington Society, led us (4 adults and 4 teenagers) on wonderfully informative and entertaining stroll through Madrid a few days before Christmas. He is extremely knowledgeable and charming, and our time with him flew by. All the tapas were excellent and we loved the treats at the city's oldest pastry shop. I would recommend any of his services without reservation!

My wife and I had a wonderful afternoon walking through the streets of Madrid discussing the history of the city with the Chairman. He even graciously customized our itinerary based on topics my wife and I were interested in.

I highly recommend this experience for history lovers. It’s incredibly rare to be able enjoy something like this alongside an actual historian…and the wines and tapas that go along with it are exceptional.

Mr. Drake-Jones brings gravitas to the walking tour and I very much enjoyed his use of language (will we ever forget "salubrious" or "chuffed"? No, we will not.) As he states at the beginning of the tour, this is Madrid from his point of view and we found that to be more personable than a generic history lesson. His choices of places to stop for tapas and drinks and historical locations were excellent. When we return to Madrid we plan to do another tour with him if possible (the Hemingway tour looks intriguing.) Thank you for a fun outing!

We went to Madrid for our kids spring break, and went on a history walk with Stephen. He has a unique format, as he tells you the history of Spain via the many statues in the historical core. Along the way, you stop at restaurants for drinks and tapas. It's not a taxing adventure, the actual amount of walking was easy for our 7 and 9 year old girls. They loved the format too, and enjoyed the tapas. Take this tour!

This tour with wine and tapas was the highlight of our trip to Madrid. Stephen not only offers tremendous knowledge of Spanish history and culture across different eras, but he tells it through his own eyes and life experiences with his unique sense of humor. The tour was planned but not scripted - he encouraged us to ask a lot of questions and catered the information to what we found interesting. The tour was longer than we expected and the pace was adequate, with a combination of walking around and sitting down while listening to fascinating stories over multiple glasses of wine. It was a very enjoyable and educating afternoon and I highly recommend it!

Mr. Stephen Drake Jones was not only knowledgable about the tour, but also very entertaining and jovial. He was as charming as he was intelligent - as well as seamless in navigating our destinations, one adventure to the next. I highly recommend any tour he offers!
