Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Avoid peak hours if you don't want to stand in the queue for 30min +, for us this was no problem as we hadn't decided on which pairs of espadrilles to buy yet. Once inside, you should already have an idea of what products you want and let the staff know straight away. Extensive selection of espadrilles (flat, heels etc), for men, women and children, at a very affordable price. Espadrilles are authentic although not the most comfortable on the market.

Overall a great experience, an obligatory stop for anyone who visits Madrid!

I spend the summer wearing espadrilles and when in Spain you must of course buy espadrilles and if you are going to do that you should buy the best.
Casa Hernanz is one of the oldest makers of these shoes and handmade to this day.
Go early as the queues can get long and and in the summer the heat is unbearable.
The choice is huge so try and choose while you are queuing as it will save you lots of time.
All shoes are in European sizes so learn your size although there is a chart with sizes.
The staff is helpful and ready to help but the main language is of course Spanish.
The prices for the basic shoes start from around 10 Euro so they really are a bargain

The espadrilles are OK but the service is not. You stand in line waiting for more than 45 minutes before you can enter the shop, only to be treated rudely. If you ask for a different size or model or color of espadrilles they act as if you are a nuisance. I will not go back there.

I knew I wanted to check Casa Hernandez before buying espadrilles anywhere else. I was overwhelmed by the options at my first visit so I returned a second day to buy more. Be prepared by selecting the shoe you want from the window display before entering the store. Inside you will stand in a line/mob of others waiting to be assisted at the counter. When it is your turn the sales man will mostly speak Spanish but you are able to point at the shoes you want and then tell him the size in European sizing. Prices are great. Bought 4 pair for myself and a few for gifts. Bought them snug assuming they will stretch. Fun experience.

We stumbled upon this place by renting the flat directly above it! We were wondering what the constant lines were for and when we entered the shop we found out it was well worth the wait (prepare to wait between 30-45min). The best thing is the variety (every color and style imaginable) and the prices (adult shoes start at € 6). I would suggest taking photos on your phone of exactly what you want before you walk in (all the shoes are displayed in the window) and be ready with your exact color and European size. The shopkeepers do not speak much English so it is best if you can let them know your shoe size etc in Spanish. Know that you cannot merely drop in- going here is an excursion and be prepared to spend between 1-2 hours on the entire process. But it is WELL worth it.

If you want to experience the worst quality in customer service go to Casa Hernanz. I go to Madrid often and I’ll never go back to buy espadrilles there...even if their shoes are a bit cheaper than in other places. Being mistreated isn’t worth it!

Be prepared for the process. At Casa Hernanz it is best to window shop first, make yourself a list of the shoes you are interested in. Next you get in line to get into the store . Once you get up to the counter be ready to tell the clerk which alpargatas (espadrilles) that you like and your size - if you don't know your European size there are charts to help you. Note that they only serve 2 or 3 people at a time, so you'll want to be as quick as you can about trying on and making your decisions (that's where the prior window shopping becomes important) They bring you the shoes, and you try on, make your final decision and pay at the counter.

The prices are great, and the quality is very good. I've been buying alpargatas at Casa Hernanz for several years, and except for occasional issues with rubber soles coming loose the shoes can take a beating.

Highly recommend the experience!

Own a pair of shoes made by craftsmen whose skills were passed on from generation to generation. Since 1845.

Tips:
- check store hours before going.
- don't get discouraged with the line you'll see. It's worth the wait.
- While waiting, take photos of the styles you're interested in. Helps with the language barrier. This will help you do your shopping faster and will make the wait go faster for others.
- When shopping for kids, mind the window display. They wrote available colours for certain sizes.
- We read that it should initially be snug at first because the fabric will stretch as you wear it.

I found this shoe shop near the Plaza Mayor because my daughter asked me to buy her espadrilles. The shop was busy but we got service really quickly. There were multiple styles in different attractive colors. The gentleman who attended to me was very patient. There were sheets for conversion of US to European sizes right at the counter. The prices were reasonable.I ended up going back for more.I bought multiple pairs for my daughters and me.I also bought pairs for my sisters and nieces. They also had styles for men.I bought a pair for my son and he liked it.Just don’t get too carried away because of luggage weight limits.I ended up stuffing some in my and my husband’s carry on luggages.
