Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

The espadrilles are OK but the service is not. You stand in line waiting for more than 45 minutes before you can enter the shop, only to be treated rudely. If you ask for a different size or model or color of espadrilles they act as if you are a nuisance. I will not go back there.

Intrigued by the line outside this store, I stopped and looked at it selling espadrilles. I've always loved them... after a long queue that gave me time to find out and see the windows, I finally got in. In love with the shop and every type of footwear on display. Salesman young, very kind and friendly. Happy to have brought home a real souvenir from Madrid.

Casa Hernanz was an accidental find. We saw the long queue and wanted to know why everyone wanted to shop at this particular store. Unknown to me the owner himself assisted me. He was so patient as I purchased 4 pairs of shoes for me and my daughters, asking about multiple sizes and styles. I'm now a forever customer! I'm more than happy with my purchase!

I spend the summer wearing espadrilles and when in Spain you must of course buy espadrilles and if you are going to do that you should buy the best.
Casa Hernanz is one of the oldest makers of these shoes and handmade to this day.
Go early as the queues can get long and and in the summer the heat is unbearable.
The choice is huge so try and choose while you are queuing as it will save you lots of time.
All shoes are in European sizes so learn your size although there is a chart with sizes.
The staff is helpful and ready to help but the main language is of course Spanish.
The prices for the basic shoes start from around 10 Euro so they really are a bargain

I knew I wanted to check Casa Hernandez before buying espadrilles anywhere else. I was overwhelmed by the options at my first visit so I returned a second day to buy more. Be prepared by selecting the shoe you want from the window display before entering the store. Inside you will stand in a line/mob of others waiting to be assisted at the counter. When it is your turn the sales man will mostly speak Spanish but you are able to point at the shoes you want and then tell him the size in European sizing. Prices are great. Bought 4 pair for myself and a few for gifts. Bought them snug assuming they will stretch. Fun experience.

We stumbled upon this place by renting the flat directly above it! We were wondering what the constant lines were for and when we entered the shop we found out it was well worth the wait (prepare to wait between 30-45min). The best thing is the variety (every color and style imaginable) and the prices (adult shoes start at € 6). I would suggest taking photos on your phone of exactly what you want before you walk in (all the shoes are displayed in the window) and be ready with your exact color and European size. The shopkeepers do not speak much English so it is best if you can let them know your shoe size etc in Spanish. Know that you cannot merely drop in- going here is an excursion and be prepared to spend between 1-2 hours on the entire process. But it is WELL worth it.

If you want to experience the worst quality in customer service go to Casa Hernanz. I go to Madrid often and I’ll never go back to buy espadrilles there...even if their shoes are a bit cheaper than in other places. Being mistreated isn’t worth it!

Hi, I would love to order some laced espadrilles online and wondered if had to buy my size or do they size big/small?
Your feedback is much appreciated.
Regards,
David

I would recommend ordering a half or even full size smaller if it’s soft fabric. Mine stretched a lot and cannot wear them anymore.
