Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

This nice neighborhood market located in the heart of La Latina. There food, wine, second hand and other shops. The market is not big and not fancy like Mercado San Miguel, but you can really feel here the local atmosphere and be away of lots of tourists. Nice stop if you are in La Latina. Enjoy!

About the best place in Madrid for fresh produce. About the only place. After so much meat consumption this was a godsend.
It’s a rather large market in La Latina neighborhood, but many stalls are shuttered. Clearly they don’t have the crowds they deserve.
Nevertheless lots of meat, poultry, and seafood besides the extensive produce. Only thing lacking is a good panaderia or pasteleria.
Very little prepared food - unlike Mercado San Miguel, which is nothing but - the neighborhood is full of good places.
Well worth a visit.

We went to both San Miguel Market and Cebada market so we saw both ends of the spectrum. San Miguel is all gourmet food stalls and wine bars and touristy, whereas Cebada is no-frills fruit, veg, local produce, meat and seafood. It’s colourful, more earthy and authentic.
The original market here was built in 1868 but the one you see here now was built in 1958. It’s modern and non-descript, with car parking and a central lift to cover the 2 levels. The building itself doesn't have any real appeal or character. However, there’s plenty of character inside. When you walk in from the street, there is a map showing the layout of stalls but we just wandered around. There are several places where you can eat which were tempting and a range of other stalls like the knife sharpener and down the back of the first level we found a second hand book seller. It’s worth having a wander.
We strolled through while waiting for the nearby Calle Cava Baja tapas bars to open. A large number of stalls were closed esp upstairs so it was quieter than I might have expected. However it was getting near mid-week closing time so I’d suggest going earlier in the morning or on a Saturday when it’s probably a bit livelier.
HOURS: Open Mon-Fri from 9 -2pm and until late on Sat. Closed on Sundays

This is a proper market with a great selection of food and drink. Pulled up a chair at stall downstairs and had beer and black pudding for breakfast - only 3 Euros!

This is the perfect choice if your're eager to experience the ture heart of La Latina, one of the coolest and most authentic neighbourhoods of Madrid. I suggest a visit on Saturday at lunch time, when it turns into a great hangout where "tapear" or have a late "aperitivo" with fresh seafood and fish and inalienable "vino blanco" or "cervezita" at one of the several fish kiosks that vivify the market. Higly recomended.

This huge and ugly concrete hall is the complete opposite of the well known San Miguel market: traditional, lively and certainly not trendy. But it's one of, if not the, largest indoor market I've seen in Europe and it is a pleasure to stroll in its many alleys (on 2 floors) and to look at the innumerable fish, meat or vegetable stands. Unmissable from La Latina.. and well worth a detour.

Come here for a slice of Real Madrid market & street life. Working market split over 2 levels.... Fantastic fish, meats, veg, fruit, preserves....it's a foodies paradise.
Downstairs @ the fish stalls you have a huge selection of fresh seafood available to eat on site at the counter washed down with a glass of house wine or a can of beer. Choose the freshest clams, mussels, prawns, crabs, octopus, lobster, percebes, it's all here waiting for you to discover.
Super atmosphere here too, lots of locals & Spanish tourists with a sprinkling go us guiris (foreign tourists) .
This is a working market so don't expect fine dining... Had our wine from plastic glasses & beer from the can. Visited here about an hour after we squeezed out of the scrum of tourists in mercado San Miguel and the experience could not have been more stark... Real street life rather than the staged version at half of the price !
Sampled the Pulpo to which they add add a nice pinch of sea salt , a glug of olive oil and a sprinkling of paprika. Super flavour & the texture combo of the soft gelatinous octopus & crunchy coarse salt... Yummy. € 6.50 for a 1/4 kilo portion of Pulpo with 2 glass (which became 4) of wine to wash it down..... Had finished the first 2 glasses of wine & my wife charmed the fish guy who duly topped us up.
Left here on a high a continued on our merry way on our cultural & culinary tour of Madrid.

We stopped in around 1:30pm so close to closing time. Many of the fresh food stalls were closing down but what we saw looked good. The real gem for us was lunch. There were several lunch spots still open with a handful of customers lingering around. The menus were similar so we picked one with cider bear on tap. We decided to go with the soup of the day, a traditional Madrid stew with chickpeas and meats. It was fantastic! Warm and hearty on a cold day and went perfectly with the beer. Our total bill for three bears and two soups was 13euro. We’ll definitely go back earlier in the day to see more open stalls.

This is a real locals market and so it opens early and closes early and many stalls are shut for the august holidays but it offers a great range of produce to see and buy and the on site refreshment places are excellent value because they are not set up for tourists, rare Spanish wines were 2euros a glass or two beers, a huge piece of frittata for 5 euros. Not far from the city centre, well worth checking out.

It is an uncommon place as it is a plaza to apparently buy groceries and food, noisy, not fancy at all and a bit smelly, but has a great offering of cooked food. Mostly seafood with the Spanish flavors accompanied by wine, beer, soda or whatever you may like. The thing about the place is that it serves great food, at really low costs and has a unique environment that, though it is a bit disordered, has great energy from the people serving and friends and family sharing Spanish tapas. I really enjoyed the place and I am really grateful to the person that gave me this local hint.
