My wife and I have just returned from a two week trip to Portugal, Spain and the Cote d’Azur. The clear highlight of the trip, and perhaps of any trip we have ever taken, was the tour we took with Dr. David Mathieson of the Jarama Valley battlefield and related Spanish Civil War sites in Madrid. Before we took the... More

Incredible tour on a little discussed subject. Spain is lacking in any museums dedicated to the Spanish Civil War, which makes this tour even more special.

Very interesting and informative tour with the very knowledgable David Mathieson, author of book on the subject. Learned lots and benefitted from David's expert knowledge including the role of the International Brigade, the role of women in the civil war, military strategy all against a backdrop of Spain's history and 20th century European history. Would now like to do tours... More

We've been taking the tour round Madrid last autumn and despite a contstant rain I could not have thought of a better way to spend the time. Even as someone who doesn't know a great deal about the Spanish Civil War the tour was fascinating as many of the original cites and traces of the war are still to be... More

The Spanish Civil War was a defining moment in Europe in the 1930s. Eager to know more we went a day tour with David Mathieson, author of the book Frontline Madrid. After an explanation of events in Madrid we left the city to drive to the mountain battlefield at Guadarrama, made famous by Ernest Hemingway in For Whom the Bell... More

I took the Tour called "John Cornford and Madrid's Western front" and i am very glad i had the chance to do so. David managed to draw connections between the history of the battle of Madrid during the Spanish Civil war, the (memorial) politics of post-war spain and the way the city and its sites appear today - a very... Highly recommended! The three hours flew by. If you ever wanted to know anything about the International Brigades or the resistance of Madrid in the Spanish Civil War then David Mathieson is your man. In fact you will struggle elsewhere to find out much at all about the history of the Spanish Republic, such is the way Spain has struggled... More

I took all four of David's riveting tours of Spanish Civil War sites and was impressed by his depth of knowledge and abilities as a storyteller. I felt that I had been carried back to a time that is both long ago in Spanish history and very present in Spain's life today. Excellent for people who know little about the... More

Dr. David Mathieson’s 3-hour tour of Spanish Civil War battle sites in Madrid was a highlight of our month-long visit to Spain & Italy. It gave us a solid understanding of some of the history of the war and its meaning for Spain and the entire world, then and still. David, author of a book about the battles, is highly... More

An excellent and inspiring tour. Would recommend for anyone who wants to understand the recent history of Spain. Keeping the memory of the International Brigades alive. The visit to the battlefields at the University is fascinating.

Staying in Arguelles

Neighborhood Profile
Arguelles
Just south of the sprawling campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, Arguelles exudes a fast-paced, collegiate vibe. The main street, Calle Princesa, is filled with twenty-somethings rushing between classes and errands, meeting up with classmates, and grabbing cheap beers and cheap eats. This is a prime shopping spot where the major Spanish clothing and department store chains are less busy than their downtown counterparts, and there is an array of casual dining options to choose from. Check out nearby outdoor spaces such as the lushly planted Plaza de España to the south, which is often filled with craft stalls. To the west of Arguelles is the giant Parque Oueste, a calm and picturesque park with its own Egyptian temple.
