The area

Address
Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

It has been a long time since I returned to these gardens, beautiful since the Paseo de la Virgen del Puerto and I have to say that they have improved, they have fixed the paths, trees and vegetation, some things are missing but I suppose everything takes time. I totally agree with other comments. They do not have or I did not see any type of security or surveillance and this should not be like this, for many reasons that we all know, it can be somewhat dangerous.

Fabulous park to have fairly centrally in Madrid. Full of huge old trees. Really pretty green areas. Quite wild in some areas which I love. Definitely come and stroll around on the way to the cathedral or to Latino.

This is a lovely garden (more of a park, actually), right next to the royal palace.
The garden is beautifully maintained, with numerous trees, flowers, bushes and fountains.
The garden also provides a magnificent view of the royal palace, uphill.
The only irritating part regarding this garden is that it have very few exits and some of them are not open to the public (as they use the police).
As long as you have a long time to spare and you do not mind walking uphill, only to find out the exit is not really an exit – you'd be fine.
Take an hour to fully enjoy the lovely garden.

We really enjoyed our walk in Campo del Moro. It's well-laid out, and has a formal and informal section, with plenty of cover on a warm day. Very easy to spend at least an hour here and large enough to get some great photos uncluttered with other tourists.

The down-side of this attraction is it has one entry gate. If you visit Palacio Real, you then go all the way around the gardens to enter from the bottom of the park. It's quite a walk although it is downhill. You'll probably want a taxi to head home or to your next attraction.

A word of caution. Depending on the way you choose, on the way down you may walk along a path which winds and switches back on itself. My wife and I noticed a group of youths (about 15 of them) had spread themselves out evenly about 10-20 metres apart across the terraces standing one by one but looking very suspicious. They certainly sprang to attention when we started to walk down on our own. My guess is isolated tourists might get 'bumped' or a purse grabbed. The stolen article would fly from level to level before you knew it without any chance of you following it. It reminded me very much of the steps at Montmartre and similar 'set-ups' there. We merely waited for a larger group and then walked down together. The minute the larger group arrived the youths certainly lost a lot of interest.

Our guide dropped us off at this beautiful park and we spent another 2 hours admiring the beauty. Even though it was early March, the park was beautifully manicured and there were lots of trees, flower beds, statues for photos.

#1 garden in Madrid and one of the best views to the Royal Palace.

The garden is a historical place with lakes, wide fauna and trees.

It is a must in Your Madrid visit!

The Campo de Moro Gardens are a hidden treasure dating back to the 12th century when a Muslim Army set up camp there. Situated behind Palacio Real the gardens became a hunting park before eventually being landscaped in a style after the English gardens of the 19th century. Today it is a tranquil oasis where you can escape the bustle and noise of Madrid.

Although on a map it looks close to the Palacio Madrid don’t be fooled. You do need walk along the busy Calle Bailen and Cuesta de San Vicente before you come to the entrance to the gardens. However, once you have entered the park the noise of Madrid begins to fade away and this is an ideal place to find tranquillity and summer shade under the tall bushes. Although slightly off the beaten track this park is worth a visit when in Madrid.

We knew from reading other reviews where to find the one and only entrance/exit, but it was longer to get there and back from the Palace/Jardins Sabatini level than we had anticipated. Going to it was downhill, coming back was uphill no matter which of the two routes you chose when exiting.

Very quiet, some lovely views of the palace, a resident peacock which doesn't mind cameras, and some nice paths to stroll past some features, but in terms of plants, flowers and colour rather disappointing.

Not a "must see" for tourists but a lovely spot for residents to take a picnic and spend the day in the heat of the summer.

The "Jardines del Campo del Moro" are down behind the Royal Palace. You have to walk along a quite busy road right down to the bottom end to find the one and only gate but it is certainly worth the walk. Once inside it is like you are in a forest in the middle of no where. The traffic noise is gone and all you can hear are the birds. As you move deeper into the park it becomes more and more manicured until you reach the very middle with lawn, statues and a lovely view up to the palace. A beautiful place to sit and relax for a while away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Moorish Garden (Campo del Moro) is a secret gem of a Madrid. Placed just behind the Royal palace it offers peacefull shift away from the city crowd., and also amazing views of the Palace. Unfortunately there is only one entrance far away from the Palace, on the Paseo de la Virgen del Puerto, but if walking is not a problem for you it is definitely worth it. It also has a very interesting history from being camp of Moorish army in 12th century, playground for royal children in 19th century, closed under Franco to open public park today. Definitely place to walking, relaxing and enjoying a day in Madrid.
