Compared to Barcelona, this city operates on a slower pace, even though it is the capital of Spain. There are the famous museums, like The Prado and city parks, like the Retivo, but there is no hustle and bustle. You do not see a lot of chain stores or American fast food places. The restaurants are wonderful and are all over. More people eat on the outside tables than inside. The normal dinner hour is 9 PM and you can spend as much time as you want without feeling rushed. The public transportation system is clean, convenient, inexpensive, reliable and operate from early in the morning till very late in the evening. Most of the stores seem to be privately owned and many of them close from around 2 PM to 5 PM. These stores also do not stay open late in the evening during the weekdays and a lot of them are closed on Sundays. In early October when I visited, the weather was mild, averaging in the mid 70's. Lastly, enjoy the roof top bars and restaurants for a great view of the city.

First stop in Spain - Madrid, we had a private tour to get an overview of the city and the highlights. Our guide and owner of the company Gemma was an excellent resource on the culture, history and dining hot spots. The second day we did a tour of the Prado Museum and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia followed by a wine tasting. We will definitely go back and use this company again and perhaps do some day trips.

Gemma’s knowledge of Spain and Madrid specifically is impressive, and she presents it with an engaging style that keeps you riveted. She also provided some last-minute flexibility to accommodate our schedule all the better. Gemma is highly likable and my wife, her father and I would strongly recommend Gemma for all age groups and sizes.

Madrid has fewer tourists than Barcelona, but is crowded with vibrant community life, great little shopping precincts (LaLetras), superb art galleries, and more restaurants with fresh regional and South American food than you’d think possible in a city this size. Madrilènes love to eat out with friends and family. Our family of 4 adults very much enjoyed strolling the neighbourhoods.
