The area
Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Fun and easy going, this place is filled with young people who want to have fun. Everyone is easy going, its an open and inclusive environment. Just walk around and find a place to eat/grab a drink, then walk a bit more and find the next bar.. loved it!

From what I heard, this neighborhood has been revived in the past years by the gay community...It is awesome, and in my opinion, the best restuarants in Madrid are located in this area. It is right off the Gran Via and it is hip and modern...I dinned at a restuarant called "La Sacristia" and it was the best meal I had in Madrid. Expensive...But given the fact that everything in Madrid is expensive...Well worth it.

Independently if it’s gay area or not, I would say this street contains some of the best restaurants and pubs and night life in Madrid. It doesn’t get as crazy as they paint it “with travestis everywhere” and that. Just a normal night life street as any other.

The Chueca metro square is a hub for partying starting around 5 pm and picks up speed about 11:30pm until 4 am.
This area is NOT for sleeping. Earplugs, alcohol and sleeping medications don't even make a dent in the noise level.
Great for meandering with wonderful shops , restaurants, bakeries and more, just not for those who REQUIRE sleep unless you're a vampire.

We were travelling with 2kids aged 11 and 15 and got a bit worried for liberal neighbourhood. It was not really necessary. With my Basic skills of castellano, we got By everywhere, great Mercado next door, churros for Morning coffee and easily walkable to major art museums, shopping street - I really can recommend it. There are no big hotels which add special flavour. My fav calle de la Liberdad - great restaurants, wine bars of mixed genre.

Chueca has become the gay district of Madrid where many businesses are focussed on the gay customer. Indeed, this area has evolved to become a colourful neighbourhood where gay couples now live alongside an elderly population who have lived here all their lives. The area is diverse, tolerant and vibrant and certainly worth a visit.
As the day progresses the area becomes busier and life tends to centre round the Plaza de Chueca and surrounding streets where there are numerous bars, cafes and niche shops. Just sauntering along the narrow streets provides an opportunity to watch beautiful urban tribes pass by.
Plaza de Chueca is walking distance from Gran Via or you can take the Metro to Chueca which is situated within the square itself. This is a popular area and by mid evening it is often difficult to find an empty table at many of the bars.
Just beyond the Plaza de Chueca you can also find the wonderful Mercado de San Anton in Calle de Augusto Figueroa. Here you can go to the bar on the top floor and overlook the streets of Chueca which is particularly wonderful on a summer’s night.

Think Greenwich village if you visited nyc, Chueca is a world of everything. From great gentrified neighborhoods to extreme posh buildings and areas. Shopping and dining are keys to this area. This area caters to the mom and pop atores still but it is starting to fade. Great places for tapas, cheap eats and luxury, great brunches and of course alot of shoe stores. Its a gem that should not be missed

It was unexpectedly beautiful right at the center of Madrid. It's bars, clubs and restaurants are all staffed with hot Spanish guys. This is gay heaven! Thank you Gay God!

First off, this is not a gay hangout. We went there and it was a completely integrated hangout for the twentysomething crowd. Pure insanity no matter what night of the week you go. Crowded, noisy and forget getting into any bar. Luckily, it's safe at night. If you don't mind crowds, this is your place. Others beware.

I was lucky enough to have a hotel in the Chueca District (Madrid House Hotel - see my review of that hotel which is worth staying at).
This is a vibrant gay district of the city with a range of restaurants coffee shops and bars. The bars are wide ranging in tastes and interests so whatever takes your fancy there will be a bar here to cater for you.
It is safe and has a real party - fiesta - atmosphere to it.

There are two or three that look very good on Calle Fuencarral, going downhill from Market San Anton..also the Market has a rooftop restaurant that's quite good. Also check out dining in the new hotel (amazing decor, but can't remember name)
