Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

- You Only Live OnceHigh Wycombe, United Kingdom620 contributionsGran Via, MadridThe Gran Via is worth a visit, simply to wonder at the magnificent architecture. It's certainly packed with all the great shops and eateries that you'd expect from a main city shopping area, but lots of them are spectacular both inside and out. The Uniqlo store is something to behold!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 13, 2023
- MissaeraNew Jersey123 contributionsGreat location but very touristyVery touristy and crowded but right in the middle of Madrid close to everything so it’s a great start. Has lots of shops we all know like Uniqlo, Primark, etc. Lots of restaurants too. Went to one of the hotels there with a rooftop bar and it definitely has a great view. This area is like a mix of Times Square and Bond Street in London cause the buildings here kept their old structure and history. Definitely a must to visit but I won’t spend a full day here. Madrid is so much more better streets than this.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 23, 2023
- Andrea BLong Beach, California30 contributionsThe most beautiful citySo many beautiful buildings to see here. Endless food and dessert options. I stayed and watched the dancers in the center. At night many of the buildings already have their Christmas decorations up and the Christmas lights are twinkling on the night. Plenty of photo opportunities if you can get one without the crowds.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 19, 2023

There are plenty of stores with beautiful white buildings in the center of the city. I highly recommend taking a stroll down Gran Via.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2024

It's a classic shopping Avenue with many famous brand shops, however its main feature is its terrific architecture in Baroque, Rococo... This is a very busy shopping street and reminded me of Times Square in New York. The architecture of the buildings here are full of character and style.
We came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was crowded. Lots of people doing their shopping.
It was very vibrant as compared to some other European cities, where most shops are closed on Sunday.

This street is full of attractive buildings, shops and resturants. It is ver well decorated with lights at this time of the year with a huge chrismas bell made of LED lights at he begining of the street with changing colors and displaying various messages. At the end of Garn Via is Plaza Espania which is going through renovations and completely closed for public may be for the next one year - if not more.

Place to be, and place with all fancy and regular stores, restaurants, boutiques, malls, tapas places.
One should visit this to get the real vibe of the city and the main Street gives a feel that this city never sleeps. You will see lot of people singing and dancing on the street along with the entertainers all around.

Madrid is one of those cities with beautiful details around every corner, and the Gran Vía is a great example of that. The buildings are gorgeous and have exquisite details, requiring a leisurely stroll to inspect each building individually. Take the time to wander into any of the many stores, sit at a café and have a coffee, or merely walk and enjoy some nice weather.

While visiting Madrid, this is one of the main avenues that must be checked out especially to capture the general feel of this city. There are restaurants, lots of shopping, lots of people and that includes a lot of people watching, a lot of walking and just a lot of interesting things to see as part of your visit to Madrid. There are also other main similar avenues as well, but start with Gran Via if you like.

Monica has a lot of knowledge and was always on had to answer questions! Great Tour!

We stayed on the Gran Via so we saw a lot of this famous street. There are hotels, shopping, theatres and restaurants but what you also see as you walk along are rows of elegant creamy white buildings, with ornate black wrought iron balconies and stylish facades decorated with columns and ornamentation. In the evening, with many facades lit up, it’s quite beautiful.
There are several significant buildings and early 1900s architecture to look out for if you stroll down the street. In particular, these ones stood out:
i) Grassy Building (1916) – this is positioned right at the start of Gran Via (look for the large ‘Rolex’ sign) and was originally built as sumptuous apartments. From the front, I thought it looks a lot like a tall, tiered wedding cake.
ii) Metropolis Building (1911) – easily recognised by the black dome, gilded with 24 karat gold and the winged ‘Victory’ figure on the very top.
iii) Telefónica Building – famous for being Spain’s first skyscraper. At 89m high, it was still Madrid’s tallest building until 1953.
iv) Capitol Building – look for the neon ‘Schweppes’ sign. It’s classic 1930s art deco architecture and was declared a building of Cultural Interest

This is the most chaotic and unpleasant part of the city. American fast food outlets, chain stores, vendors charging 3€ for a bottle of water and dirty streets. Madrid needs to look at places like Rome and Berlin to learn how it should be done.

Beautiful city's most central street, unbelievable how many people are walking in the evenings of the weekend on the enlarged sidewalks, many open shops, endless opportunities for food and drinks, street artists and a general festive atmosphere. Most amazing : next morning the city is perfectly clean and quiet. There many public transportation means, a few free of charge .I highly recommend to spend a few days just feeling the city !

This shopping area is massive, with an extensive selection of shops offering major global brand names. There are also many cafes and restaurants scattered throughout, making it easy to take a break and grab a bite to eat. However, we recommend avoiding weekends and peak times, as it can get incredibly busy, with people walking in all directions, making it difficult to navigate. Additionally, there are some old, magnificent architectural buildings interspersed between the shops, adding to the charm of the area.

Hi: how far from Hotel Tryp Cibeles to Plaza Ventas (Ventas Metro Station) for sightseeing meeting point? Is it possible to walk there or by taxi? Thanks
Written October 29, 2018
Hi!
From Tryp Madrid Cibeles to Las Ventas is about 5 km, which translates to about an hour of slow walking. If you have time and are up for sightseeing, i recomend you do it by foot. Madrid is nealy all plain, so it's not that tiresome.

Cuá es el mejor horario para las compras? y sobre su experiencia, qué lugares recomiendan para tal fin?
Muy agradecido!
Written May 29, 2018
Los horarios en Madrid son muy amplios, y se abre también en fines de semana. Y el mejor horario es por supuesto entre semana por la mañana porque hay menos gente. Ahora son muy populares Primark y otras tiendas de ropa.
