Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

When you enter this church you can see that it is very different from other churches. What is very different about this church is that in the middle of the floor, there is an octagonal structure with a 7 steps leading down, where baptisms by immersion are performed. This is the baptismal font. The middle of the octagonal structure forms a cross. Apparently the first Christian churches were constructed this way. The chairs of the church are arranged around the main altar (which is a large table) and the baptismal font.
The Church of the Virgen de la Paloma was inaugurated in 1912 by King Alfonso XIII and his wife Victoria Eugenia. The parish priest Ceferino Vahillo Felipe had the initiative to get the church constructed, and its architects were Lorenzo Alvarez Capra and Dimas Rodriguez Izquierdo. The style of the church is Mudejar, with Gothic elements. The ground plan follows the Latin Cross. The stained glass windows have the coat of arms of the donors and there are five donated by the King behind the main altar. The church was reconstructed in 1978 by the architect Antonio Abalos Culebras, following the new dictates of the Second Vatican Council.
The image of the Virgin is found in a small painting, which dates to 1791. Apparently it was found by boys playing in the area where the church is located.

We were lucky to visit Madrid while the celebrations for the Virgen de la Paloma were taking place. The area around La Latina was full of music, as well as food, drinks, and amusement stalls. On 15 Aug the procession was really beautiful, with many locals wearing typical costumes. We have visited Madrid many times and it was nice to discover yet another face of this wonderful city
