Walking in Madrid is a must. Beautiful streets. Beautiful people. Beautiful sites to see. While walking home one night we passed the Matador. A fabulous old bar that is just charming. The Sangria was perfect. The Rioja generously poured. The Tapas savory and delicious. Just freakin cool.

Wandered in to the bar by chance on first day of 5 day visit to Madrid and it was such a good atmosphere we went back every other day as well! Definitely the best of all the bars we sampled. Great service, and generous tapas provided with the drinks. Good mix of customers and fantastic Spanish music played. Nicely dark... More

Went there with a frine, an the service was great! The food and beer were also excellent, and like the pueblos, when you order just drinks, you get a small tapas to go with. Will go back again!

Staying in Barrio de Salamanca

Neighborhood Profile
Barrio de Salamanca
Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights frame the neighborhood of Barrio Salamanca. With beautiful condominium buildings that make up most blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of opportunities for shopping or checking out the stylish displays. The locals here are polished and fashionable, the atmosphere is leisurely, and the lush Retiro Park on the southern border is yet another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. A stroll through Barrio Salamanca is all about admiring the beautiful architecture, window-shopping, and people-watching in this upper-crust corner of Madrid.
