Teatro Lara has one of the most attractive theatre auditoriums in Madrid and is a mixture of red, gold and opulence. Built in 1789 it is the only theatre in Madrid to have remained more or less in the hands of the same family that built it. As a theatre, it lends itself to theatrical productions and musical events alike and is well patronised by Madrileños of all ages and backgrounds. Indeed, it has several productions in repertoire and its popularity never wanes. I was fortunate enough to see the Wednesday evening performance of ‘Burandanga’, a comedy which I fully enjoyed. In fact it was a full house and the whole audience appeared to enjoy the production. Tickets to productions are reasonably priced and for theatre enthusiasts this building is worth a visit. But be mindful: you are in Spain - the productions are in Spanish not English. …

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EN: I was denied the right to enter the theater and to see a play, for which I had previsouly booked my ticket online, as I arrived there a few minutes before it began. I arrived just on time after having a few issues to figure out where the theater was. There are three entrances where people can queue up, and I rushed to the first one as I arrived there. I waited for a few minutes before realizing that I was in the wrong line and that there was a special one, reserved for the room where my play was being performed. I rushed there and tried to get the attention of an employee who was casually chatting with someone else. I had to call her twice until she decided to respond to my calls. By then, 5 minutes had already passed by, and when learning the play's name, I was refused entry. I then offered her to reimburse me, which she refused as well. Refusing to provide a service that has already been paid for, in fuzzy circumstances and under very questionable pretexts is called CHEATING, RIPPING OFF, ROBBING people. I am a student and had decided to spend a little bit of money on this play in order to have a cultural activity. I lost that money and will never go back to the Lara theater of Madrid.…

Response from Antonio F, Gerente at Teatro Lara
Responded Nov 12, 2015

Teatro Lara is a beautiful old theatre with loads of charm. It is quite small and people are seated very close to one another, but as the play we went to wasn´t too long, it didn´t bother. We had a good time (Locuras cotidianas is a surreal play at times) in the theatre. The only detail I found quite a nuisance : the play is supposed to start at 10pm, but at that time, the street is still packed with people wanting to go to the main hall and to the off one (plays in both places start at the same time?), and so, one stands waiting quite a while outside (fortunately, it wasn´t raining), arrives worrying - one can hear the ringing indicating the play will start any time soon - and the play starts and ends later than intended, of course. For people not living in the city centre, this is a real pain.…
