    a good stop. great price
this is a good museum that walks through the history of civilization and humans from a spain perspective. great exhibits in Spanish and English. students get in free. otherwise it is 3 euros per person. we went at 10 am and it was not crowded which was great..crowd's picked up around noon. worth 2 or 3 hrs for a visit. probably not great for young kids

Great overview of the history of Spain!
Spain is filled with so much history that this museum is an excellent way to understand Spain's past. Highlights include the Visigoth crowns, the Lady of Elgin, a find collection of Greek pottery and Roman statuary. An excellent museum.

    Great museum
Great exhibition in chronological order providing a Spanish view of the ancient civilianisation. Displayed were in English and Spanish and there were some great artefacts to see. Unfortunately the top floor was closed, but still plenty to see on other floors. Staff were very friendly & helpful.

Can get lost in there. Very good exhibits. Spent a lot of time
It has great exhibits and we ended up spending a lot of time. Their app doesn’t work which is unfortunate but they do have placards in English as well to follow along. Lots of historical Hispania and early Spain. Enjoyed it. May not be as good for little ones but teens would like it

I really love archeological museums, though, as a Greek, it's always funny to visit other "national" archeological museums and see a whole floor dedicated to greek and Egyptian antiquities. In any case, very nice exhibitions with finds from the Iberian peninsula but not limited to it, providing a nice overview of Spain's evolution. Beautifully lit place, all in all would recommend visiting. Also only 3euros general admission.

Fantastic Museum and History of the Iberian Peninsula
Fantastic museum located in the trendy Salamanca District of Madrid. We went on International Museum Day so admission was free. Surprisingly, the museum was not crowded. Most of the signage is in English and provide complete and accurate translations of the Spanish. Short videos throughout the museum provide good information with English sub-titles. The 2nd floor was closed when we visited but we spent a good 4 hours on just the first two floors which went through the 15th Century. It is walking distance from El Retiro Park and close to multiple buses stops and train stations.

    A well organized fantastic collection
This huge museum is located in Calle de Serrano, near the Puerta de Alcala. We did not buy our tickets online, but we did not have to wait, there was no crowd at all. We spent several hours in the museum viewing the displayed artefacts at a leisurely pace. Everything is very meticulously organized. On the ground floor, there are artefacts from prehistoric times, the first floor is devoted to protohistory, the Iberian peninsula in Roman times, the late antiquity and the medieval Al Andalus. On the second floor, there are objects from ancient Egypt, Nubia and Greece. It is almost impossible to select the most memorable object, we have several of them, but the most iconic is certainly the beautiful bust of The Lady of Elche!

We only had an hour to burn in the museum and we could easily have tripled that time and still not seen all the excellent artifacts housed here. Extremely high quality museum--and very well curated and maintained. The extensive Egyptian artifacts were a surprise to us.

I wasn’t originally planning on going, but decided to check it out in the afternoon. it was only €3 entry, and there was an audio guide app you could download on your phone (bring headphones!), and i ended up spending over 3.5 hours here until my phone died! absolutely fascinating museum - as others have said, can be a little confusing to follow, but i did the guided audio option on the app and it took me through the highlights of each exhibit (follow the headphone sign with the numbers). Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Madrid and have a few hours to spare.

One of my favorite museums in Madrid, and really the world. Through due to covid some rooms are closed (including the Altamira replica), still worth a good 2 hours. Enjoy following the history of Spain from early man to Christian times. You will find Roman statues and mosaics, Islamic art (amazing!), ancient coins, and so much more.
It is free on Sundays and in the same building as the National Library, just the entrance is on Calle Serrano. Oh, visit the gardens! And of course the neighborhood is worth visiting as well.

We came for the Roman artifacts, jewelry, and prehistoric cave art. It was free on the Sunday we went... perhaps it's always free on Sunday. We enjoyed it immensely, and wished our legs could have taken a few more hours there!

This is a wonderful museum in Serrano, very close to Recoletos and the National Library in Madrid. The museum has an enormous value. It holds prehistoric, antique, and medieval pieces of art. It is great for those who want to learn about the amazing history of Spain: the Paleolithic, Neolithic, the Pre-Romans, the Celtics, Iberians...
I love the Dame of Elche and the Dame of Baza, the two icons from Spain.

Espectacular and well done museum. A lot to see and we would like to come back. We were told that the museum used to have a very nice restaurant but It was closed during the pandemic. We hope the museum’s management consider to reopen the restaurant again, because, It will be a wonderful and helpful addition for everybody who would like to have a break such as lunch or water or a cup of coffee there. After that, people could continue seeing the museum.

We decided to visit this museum because of the reviews, and I must say, that it exceeded our expectations. There are different floors, the collection is sorted chronologically. My boyfriend, who used to study archeollogy was really impressed by the museum. Thankfully, there are many boards with really good explanations, so it was also really interesting for me. Definetely worth a visit.

Travellers interested to know the origins of Spanish culture, shall start from this museum. Smaller, compared to other European archeological museums (for instance Vienna) however of equal importance. I visited the floor with the exhibition on Iberia Peninsula only as the Greek exhibition was closed. To summarize, I came out of the museum with knowledge on the cultural history of Iberian Peninsula and amazed from the beautiful artefacts I saw and the informative text. You will adore the bust of the Iberian Lady/Queen and the bronze roman law scripts. It has also an interesting atrium with a skylight and wooden cladded staircase. Easy to navigate.

Do not miss it.
