The area
Address
Neighborhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

Having read many of Lope's plays we really wanted to visit his house. Unfortunately we didn't plan it well in advance and even though it was a weekday off-season they had a long list of reservations (they didn't pick up phone). Trying to join a tour on the spot (in case someone canceled) didn't work and the staff was more police-like rather than welcoming. So we only saw the orange garden which is, well , an orange garden with a view on a brick wall, nothing special about it.

Amazing experience! Check online so you don´t miss it out. Free admittance but you come out ith valuable information of the times and advantures of prolific playriter Lope de Vega. I wish you can have as a guide Mrs Gemma, very educational, learned on the matter and with lots of jab-dropping anecdotes to share! A visit worth repeating!

How the other half lived a couple of centuries ago. Fascinating tour of this intimate museum, home of Lope de Vega. A law that influenced the style of architecture billeted officers with families in Madrid for life if they had a top floor. Those with the space had a lodger. Those who managed to disguise the fact from the street escaped.

Loved this place. We booked a tour of the house which is well worth seeing. Only 35 minutes and very informative. Great to see a building set out as it would have been in 1610, so interesting. Our guide Gema was excellent. Well worth a visit but definitely book or you cannot do the tour.

My husband & I enjoyed our visit to this historic home very much. In learning about the life of the playwright and his family we also learned much about life in Madrid in the early 1600s. The gardens and home itself provided a view into that time frame. Unfortunately, none of the material we read ahead of time provided the information that reservations were required to be made in advance. While the tickets are free you must make arrangements ahead of time and specify an English language tour. Also, one of the staff members simply sent us away when we arrived "without a ticket." As we were leaving we encountered another staff member who told us there were tickets available for an English speaking tour later in the day. We accepted the tickets and came back later. It was worth re-arranging our schedule to accommodate the second visit. Our impression was that the first staff member did not want to deal with our intermediate Spanish language skills in explaining the schedule. Our impression was they prefer arrangements to be made a day or two before the planned visit. Definitely inquire ahead of time or plan to make two visits... one for tickets and one for the tour. There are stairs and no elevators and no public restroom at our time of visit.

It is a minor attraction for those who prefer less known places. It is very close to Anton Martin (line 1) metro station and walking there is a pleasure because you run away from the crowd and cross some quiet streets. The house is, obviously, partly reconstructed but gives you the idea of how it was when the writer lived there. All the rooms (studio, living room, bedrooms and kitchen) contain ancient furniture but only a couple of them really belonged to the writer.
The entrance is free but you are requested to follow a 30 minutes tour (free of charge) which is only in Spanish. This is the main fault of this attraction. If you don’t know the language you miss some interesting explanations and just enjoy the pleasure to stay in a house of the 17th century. If you want to be sure to visit the house reserve the tour. Only ten people are allowed to enter the house: if you show up without reservation the first or the second tour could be already full.

Since I read and studied Lope de Vega, the inhouse tour guide was excellent.
She showed what would have been the life of Lope de Vega, how he got his
inspiration and how did he live in his house during the 16th century.
A must for Spanish language lovers, others who do not know
not worth the visit.

I wrote to them about a month ahead of our visit (March 2018) to request a guided tour, as they advise on their website. I'm fairly fluent in Spanish but my mom isn't quite as proficient as I am, so I requested a tour in English, but as I asked for a particular time on a particular date in order to fit best into our itinerary, they had to give us a Spanish tour, as Javier, the kind gentleman in their office, explained in his very prompt reply. I believe we were the only non-native Spanish speakers in our group, by design very small (about a dozen people), but our guide, a very personable, articulate, and obviously very well-educated young man, was very engaging and gave a fascinating and very pleasant 30-35 minute tour. He spoke fast but clearly, so I was able to understand almost all of what he said; my mom didn't catch everything due to the wide-ranging vocabulary, but I helped her out, and she was almost always able to get the gist of what he was saying. The house itself is amazing, and the guide was excellent about pointing out what actually belonged to Lope (not much) and where the other pieces (all from his same era) came from, many of which places had connections to him. He also brought the literary giant to life, warts and all, recounting numerous fascinating anecdotes about his life, family, and work. Highly recommended for lovers of history and/or literature! And if you're not a proficient Spanish speaker, I recommend trying to arrange for an English-language tour (with plenty of advanced notice) to get the most out of your visit. ¡Muchas gracias por una visita tan informativa, placentera y enriquecedora!

Thank you very much for your recommendation and detailed contribution, DonLuis92. It will really help other prospective visitors to know exactly what to expect of a tour to our house museum. We are sorry you could not take the tour in English, as you originally wished - normally it is possible, even not booking long in advance, given the visitor has some flexibility in terms of date and time. We will for sure transmit your satisfaction to the team of guides and Javier in particular - their aim is to give an entertaining as well as informative tour so that one gets to know more about Lope and everyday life in Spain´s literary Golden Age in a pleasant way. We do hope you and your mother enjoyed the rest of your trip to Madrid. Best regards,

Had Cervantes not been born, Lope de Vega would be considered the greatest Spanish author. He claimed he wrote 1500 plays (some 400+ survive). But he also wrote novels, lyric poems, and several epics. One wonders how he managed time for his vaunted love-life. During his lifetime the expression "Es de Lope" was synonymous with greatness. The house is a must see. Ironic that his house is on Calle de Cervantes (name change occurred after Lope's death) and Cervantes' resting place is on Calle de Lope de Vega.
