I love the architecture of this church. It is Neo-Byzantine architecture, which makes it very unique in Madrid. We went at twilight and saw the beautiful nativity scene (belen) that was installed on the right side of the church.

This church is worth a visit, small but beautiful with a great time work specially in its dome. Entrance is free.

This church is close to the sites but easy to miss. It's just north of Retiro park and 2 short blocks east of Puerta de Alcalá. We make it a habit to step inside every church with an unlocked door. We are rarely, if ever, disappointed, This time we were richly rewarded. This large domed church is full of beautiful... More

Iglesia de San Manuel and San Benito is a new church considering the history of Madrid, it was only constructed in the beginning of the 20th century. Approaching it from the Retiro Park it is a very striking church constructed in stone and white marble with a red copper dome. Unfortunately on the afternoon of our planned visit a wedding... More

San Manuel and San Benito church, easily accessible being located close to the Parque del Retiro, and a few dozen meters from the gate Puerta Alcala along the same Calle Alcala. Interesting architecture, in short, the most striking thing is undoubtedly the high bell tower and the dome. Definitely to visit.

The Church of San Manuel and San Benito is the only church in Madrid with Neo-Byzantine architecture. This gives the church an originality that other churches do not have. I especially like the stained glass windows and the mosaics that adorn the interior of this building.

This church is so beautiful, and has such lovely acoustics, that I am going back to conduct a choral concert on Tues 29 October, 20.30.

This church is in calle Alcala, across Parque del Retiro, close to the Puerta de Alcala. Worth seeing, bizantine style, newly spruced up. Absolutely delightful.

The Church of San Manuel and San Benito is one of my favorite churches in Madrid because its architecture is so very different. It is called Neo-Byzantine. The inside of the cupola has a very unique painting. There is a magnificent crucifix of the 19th century too.

Staying in Barrio de Salamanca

Neighborhood Profile
Barrio de Salamanca
Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights frame the neighborhood of Barrio Salamanca. With beautiful condominium buildings that make up most blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of opportunities for shopping or checking out the stylish displays. The locals here are polished and fashionable, the atmosphere is leisurely, and the lush Retiro Park on the southern border is yet another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. A stroll through Barrio Salamanca is all about admiring the beautiful architecture, window-shopping, and people-watching in this upper-crust corner of Madrid.
