- Madrilenos per un giornoMadrid, Spain66 contributionsPasión y muerte, bullfighting, although controversial, continues to embody the essence of Spanish tradition. iLa Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is located in the Salamanca neighborhood, and hosts 26,000 spectators, the third largest in the world after Mexico and Venezuela. iBuilt in neomudéjar style, it houses an important bullfighting museum, which tells its story. Inside there is a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe and one to the Virgin of Paloma, patron saints of Mexico and Madrid respectively. iIt was designed by architect José Espeliu. (Before 1931 bullfights in Madrid were held in a smaller facility, built in 1874, but the rise in popularity of this show in the 1920s meant that a new, larger building was needed.) 1️⃣The first inauguration bullfight was held on June 17, 1931. During the Spanish Civil War bullfighting was suspended, and resumed in 1939. Since then the arena has been used regularly every year from March to December. 🎶It is also occasionally used for other shows. On July 2, 1965, the Beatles performed there and in 1996 the rock band AC/DC held a concert there, from which the DVD "No Bull" was taken. 🗣Bruce Springsteen claimed that the arena was the place with the best acoustics he had ever played. ❗We recommend that you include it in a night itinerary during your stay in Madrid. Surely you will be fascinated.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 18, 2024
- BijitgohainNew Delhi, India61 contributionsBullfighting in Madrid I recently on my travel to Madrid visited the Las Ventas to watch Bull fighting. Where : Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, Madrid How do you reach : Take the Metro to Ventas and once you come out of the station will see the arena Event and Tickets : As I understood, the event happens on specific days, guess on Sundays only and towards the evening. Tickets are sold out in advance so book online. I was a bit lucky, although it was a full house , outside the arena I person sold me 2 tickets for 50 euros each , original price being about 44 euros...not a bad deal. Also ticket prices vary basis your seat Seating: Once you enter the arena, pretty well marked is the gate you have to approach and there are guides who show you your seat. Please note you are sitting on concrete and rent cushion for about 2-3 euros from within the arena. Experience: A packed house of people, electrifying atmosphere - looking at the age group seems it's so much part of the culture. The event i witnessed had 4 -5 fights, and to be honest the initial 1-2, I was excited as it was my first visit but then on it starts getting boring as it's the same thing being repeated again and again and again. but for sure if in Madrid a check mark activity one should do in a lifetime.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 18, 2024
- Gustavo WoltmannLondon, United Kingdom59 contributionsOur family visit to Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid was a captivating and culturally enriching experience. The blend of history, architecture, and tradition made it a memorable stop on our trip. The Setting Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is the largest bullring in Spain and a significant cultural landmark. The architecture is stunning, with its Neo-Mudéjar style and intricate brickwork. The grand façade, with its detailed arches and tiles, immediately captures your attention as you approach. Family-Friendly Atmosphere While the bullring is primarily associated with bullfighting, which may not be suitable for all families, our visit was focused on the architectural tour and the museum. This approach made it a family-friendly outing, allowing us to appreciate the cultural aspects without engaging in the actual bullfighting events. Activities and Attractions * Guided Tour: We opted for a guided tour, which was informative and engaging. The guide provided a thorough history of Las Ventas, explaining its significance in Spanish culture. The children were fascinated by the stories and the grandeur of the arena. * Museum of Bullfighting: The museum inside Las Ventas was a highlight. It offered a detailed look at the history and art of bullfighting, with exhibits that included traditional costumes, photographs, and paintings. The interactive displays were particularly appealing to the kids, making it an educational experience. * Exploring the Bullring: Walking through the bullring itself was an awe-inspiring experience. Standing in the center of the arena, we could imagine the intensity of the bullfights. The kids enjoyed exploring the various sections, including the stables and the chapel. * Photo Opportunities: The architecture provided numerous opportunities for stunning photographs. The colorful tiles and detailed designs were perfect backdrops for family pictures. Tips for Visiting Families * Choose the Right Tour: If you have young children, consider choosing a tour that focuses on the architecture and history rather than the bullfighting. This ensures the experience remains suitable for all ages. * Prepare for the Heat: The open-air structure of Las Ventas can get quite hot, especially in the summer. Bring hats, sunscreen, and water to stay comfortable. * Educational Approach: Explain the cultural and historical significance of the bullring to the kids beforehand. This helps them appreciate the visit more and understand the context. * Museum Visit: Allocate enough time for the museum, as it provides a rich context and deeper understanding of the bullring and bullfighting traditions. Visiting Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas was a unique and enriching experience for our family. The architectural beauty, combined with the historical and cultural insights, made it a worthwhile visit. While the topic of bullfighting can be sensitive, focusing on the cultural aspects and history allowed us to have a meaningful and enjoyable family outing. We left with a deeper appreciation for this iconic Spanish landmark and many wonderful memories.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 28, 2024
- KitkitkittyEdinburgh, United Kingdom12 contributionsThis is an absolutely stunning building. We visited with the audio guide during the final slot of the day having booked online in the afternoon and it was quiet. Got to stand alone in the middle of the ring which was pretty cool. A unique experience.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 17, 2024
- texxRome, Italy54 contributionsYou can be for or against the "bullfighting" personal matter.... I visited Las Ventas during the Feria de Otono and attended a bullfight, I must admit that the show is quite fascinating but gory and touching. As for the Plaza de Toros I think it is a beautiful structure, you can guess that it is a beautiful piece of Somali history, it is a place that exudes tradition and culture, definitely worth a visit. It is well connected and served by the Metro, Ventas stop. Significant experience...Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 2, 2024
- Sally62Northampton, United Kingdom6,082 contributionsWe took the self-guided audio tour on the bullring which was very detailed and allowed us to go round at our own pace. A huge building with lots to see and a museum at the end with costumes and paintings. Learnt a lot about both the building, bullfighting, the people who have fought here and what it means to the local people. Really interesting to learn more about the culture. Would recommend a visit.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 25, 2024
- Joshua HThe Hague, The Netherlands78 contributionsI really liked it here. The museum was interesting and informative, not too boring. It’s a fascinating piece of history and still in use today. It’s also the best example of Mudejar architecture in Madrid by far, so in my opinion a must-see for any visitor. All the staff here were very friendly too and the vibe is unique. There’s a virtual reality bullfight you could partake in. There’s also a taxidermy bull from the ring that you can see up close. You have to leave a deposit behind to get an audio guide, which is pretty essential to getting a good visit here.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 2, 2024
- elena v21 contributionsWe visited the Sales and did the tour with Esteban. (We even did our run in the sand.) No words! He explained customs, stories, knew very well the history of that place and answered all our questions always with a smile. I recommend this tour, you will learn details and you will see the runs differently. Thank you very much Esteban. The group of Greeks 🤗Visited July 2024Traveled on businessWritten August 20, 2024

We took the Metro and got off at the Ventas station. The bullring was right outside the exit and a quick walk to the ticket office.
Since it was winter, it was only being used for concerts so the center of the bullring was filled with a tent, stage and lights all around. The ticket desk did let us know about this in advance of our purchase. We still went ahead with the tour but did not get to see the bullring au naturel so our in the ring family photo was not quite the same.
The included audio guide was very informative. There were 10 stops including the chapel, royal box where the king and queen would site if in attendance, the entrances for the bull and the matador, the bullring, area where the bulls were kept, clinic for those injured, etc.
I also tried the VR bullfight and got virtually run over by the bull. The harness they put around me kept me in place since I assumed people could get quite wrapped up in the game and go a little crazy. Good self protection!
The final stop was the museum and here it presented a lot of details about many of the matadors including the female ones. Uniforms, capes, swords, paintings costs, program art and more were quite engrossing to read about. All items were accompanied by signage in both Spanish and English. At the end we also go a poster to take home as our souvenir.
Well worth the visit to see and learn more about the bullring and bullfighting.

We got to the arena by Metro and the stop is right at the entrance. The metro stop is "Ventas"
We opted for the self guided tour with the audio guide which came with the tickets. It included the museum, the arena and a VR experience of a bull fight.
Very enlightening even for novices into the sport, with a lot of history of the sport. The audio guide is very well organised with numbers and explanations.
Please note you are allowed to take photos in the arena but not inside the museum, which houses old photos, manuscripts, costumes and equipment of famous bullfighters and even the stuffed heads of famous bulls.
It is possible to see the bull fight on specific days which are advertised well in advance.
There were vending machines but no restaurants.

We booked a Private Guided Tour in English and had Raoul as our guide. Raoul is very knowledgeable, funny, and informative. We were very impressed that he is fluent in English and French (which he speaks with a perfect French accent) besides his native Spanish.
We got to know all aspects of bullfighting, how a bull is considered dangerous based on the position of his horns, how the 2 different capes are used, the behind the scene preparations and support, the chapel, the infirmary, the slaughter house… We visited the museum and got to see profiles of the famous bullfighters, the lavishly resplendent suits of lights, the detailed motifs on the ceremonial swords, the beautifully embroidered capes.
The tour was very comprehensive and entertaining. We highly recommend it for you to understand the culture and tradition of Spain on bullfighting.
When we asked about the seats for the bullfight, Raoul recommended us the Sol/Sombrera Tendido 8 Bajo area 8, which is the best bang for the buck. We bought our tickets based on his advice and it was wonderful: we had a good view, we had shade and did not go bankrupt! We stayed for the whole time and got to appreciate the moves of the toreros thanks to this tour.

One of the stops of our bus sightseeing tour was in front of the Las Ventas bullring. Bullfighting is obviously one of the passions of the Spaniards and the architecture of this huge building, inaugurated in 1931, certainly reflects this passion.
The two of us were impressed by the monument dedicated to a famous toreador, José Cubero Sánchez, his nickname was el Yiyo!
We did not visit the bullring from inside...

Arranged for a bullfight through efficient and effective online service. Arrived half an hour before the event to pick up the tickets nearby, headed to the event, which was jammed with well heeled patrons and others. Paid E1.5 for a soft seat. You really cannot believe the seating arrangement, few aisles, rows of concrete, rows so tight that your knees dam into the person in front of you unless you more or less straddle the back of the person in front of you. Attendance was high. I found the bullfight shocking; a bull is literally repeated worn down with thrusts of different traditional lances and spiked banderillas until the final thrust after a lot of toreador machismo and posturing. Given the highly enthusiastic crowd and the Spanish culture and history of the tradition which seems capable of sustaining this, I believe this practice will be around for some time. I would advised against patronizing and personally regret attending.

This interactive audio tour of Las Ventas Bullring was fantastic. We went early in the day, when the place was less crowded, allowing us to fully explore the place. In particular, we took the opportunity to do a VR bullfight, take photos in the ring and visit the bullfighting museum. A great experience full of information, and very easy to reach by Metro.

This immense bull ring, the largest in Europe, has a huge history of contest, mayhem and goring in keeping with Spain’s age-old spectacle. However, today’s bullfighting attendances are at an all time low due to consumer resistance to these spectacles. In some parts of Spain, this activity is banned. The interactive audio tour of Las Ventas Bullring was informative but still failed to address the “bull in the room”. It was an interesting place that still seemed outdated and out of touch with today's sensibilities.

I know it's not en vogue to say this, but go to a bullfight if at all possible. Yes, they kill bulls, probably 6 of them. If you've never seen a large animal die, it may impact you, but it's a Spanish tradition which I am glad I partook of and will recommend.
According to the flier I got, i was there on a festival week, hence why I had Monday tickets to a novillada (newbie) bullfight. It was interesting, artistic, and educational. There weren't a ton of tourists in the seats either, which was nice... Being a tourist.
After 4 bulls I got up to pee, but they lock the doors while bulls are in the ring so you got to be quick. I didn't know so I roamed the corridors. Even cooler, I got to see the horses go in and out and some showpieces.

After Palacio Real, this is the most beautiful place I found in Madrid, the architecture is gorgeous! Despite the guided tour inside the arena being paid (which I didn't do) there is a free museum on the right side, which is beautiful! You may not agree with toradas, but you cannot deny that they are a tradition in the country and part of their history. The clothing collection is impressive, just wish I haven't seen the bull heads haning on the walls.

Nice visit for my first bullfight...although offensive to some animal rights activists the pageantry and ceremony is worth checking out. Beautiful classic bullring. Recommend sitting in the shaded areas, directly below the Presidential Box, if possible.

I want to go to 2 corridas in 2025 Feria Otono part of spain trip. (1) when the official Las Vantas 2025 schedule is published (2) I have looked at Las Vantas web site and since it is only in Spanish, il is difficult to me (I speak French and English) to figure out how it is working. Very easy to select the bullfight, the tendido and the seat but how it works once you have paid. Do you receive a confirmation, an electronic ticket (pdf) or do you have to get your ticket at Las Vantas the day of the corrida. Thank you. Richard
