This turned out to be our best night in Madrid. James was our guide and he was brilliant. We were part of a larger group (there were 10 of us) and by the end of the evening we felt we had made some real friends and knew so much more about Madrid and its food culture. The evening went by... More

Our tour was a bit of a struggle because we ended up having 3 people on a tour which makes it hard to try a lot of fun things because you can only eat so much. Still we went to some great places and Miriam was really fun and knowledgeable. A bit expensive because it only covers the first place... More

This was a highlight of our trip to Spain. Danny was a great guide and brought our group to several bars representing different regions of Spain. At each place we had the specialty of that region - sidre, white wine, red wine etc. We also tasted a variety of tapas at each place. Danny did the ordering and we did... More

We had a great time with James on the tapas tour, which was also a nice introduction to Madrid. Did this tour our first night in the city, so everything we saw was very new to us. The people in our group were nice, several Americans, Australians, and Canadians. I really like the concept of this tour and what this... More

I booked this tour on the strength of other reviews it had received. The communication after paying for the tour was top notch. I knew exactly where I needed to be and at what time. I knew what to expect from the remainder of the tour too. We met Miriam who showed us the sights and escorted us around to... More

Myself and my wife were first time visitors to Madrid and she selected this tour as a good way to get a feel for the place. Brilliant call. James took the tour and brought the group to a selection of little bars to try tapas and different drinks from the region, but he covered much more than this. He also... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
