The area
Neighborhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Part of the city's charm are definitelly its wide main streets, lined with old trees and majestic architectural monuments. Paseo de Recoletos starts from the Crhistofor Columbus monument and continues South-West to the Plaza de Cibeles.
It is one of the most beautiful walks in the city, the traffic lanes being minor to its pedestrian area, in a park-like setting, with fountains and statues.

This wide boulevard runs 700 meters from Plaza de Cibeles to Plaza de Colon.
The center part of the boulevard is a pedestrian walk lined with gardens, trees, statues, and fountains.
On our visit, there was an artisanal Christmas market.

This is a very nice boulevard, located in a spectacular area of Madrid. There is a wide pedestrian area in the center of the boulevard, with lots of large trees, benches, sculptures and statues. If you start walking at Plaza de Colon (named after Cristobal Colón, Spanish for Christopher Columbus), you will reach Plaza Cibeles in less than five minutes.
The best way to get to know this area of Madrid is to walk, and any walking tour should undoubtedly include Paseo de Recoletos, as well as Plaza Cibeles, Puerta de Alcala, Parque del Retiro, Museo del Prado and Gran Vía.

I would definitely take time to walk down here as people have done for pleasure in the last 200 years or more. Take in the buildings, monuments and floral displays.

Paseo de Recoletos is a wide, tree-lined road. It also has more than just trees. Most of the middle section of the road is pedestrianised, containing gardens, as well as trees, sculptures, fountains and people can also find the odd seat to have a rest. Additionally the architecture, along the way is quite striking, so there is never a dull moment, as there is something new to look at. One end of the road is at the Plaza de Cibeles, with the beautiful Fuente de Cibeles, while the other end of the road is at the Plaza de Colón.

The boulevard has several restaurants to sit down among greenery already for breakfast though the Madrilenos are late risers. The spring book fair is located here near the great palace of the Central Library, the tourist office has a small kiosk with more helpfull service than the bigger at Plaza Mayor. Many interesting modern sculptures are situated around the Plaza Colon, the massive frog in front of the Casino and the curvy Botero lady lying provocatively in the middle of traffic.

If you come to Madrid you should definitely walk down this wide boulevard with lovely trees and amazing buildings plus gorgeous fountains and monuments. The day we came the road was closed so no traffic. Sometimes there are events along here.

Paseo De Recoletos is a wonderful tree lined boulevard we walked down on our way to the fantastic Hard Rock Madrid.
A boulevard lined with some outstanding architecture including some great museums ,you can take a stroll from Plaza De Colon to the world famous Prado ,there's lots of cafes, bars and restaurants along the Paseo De Recoletos so it's also a great place to sample the local cuisine or grab a Cerveza or a vermouth and sit outside a cafe and chill out in.
Well worth checking out.

This boulevard runs from Plaza de Cibeles to Plaza de Colón and includes a bus lane and five traffic lanes on either side of the central pedestrian/park area. It dates to the late 1700's and is named after a monastery that was built in the area in 1592. Its a busy boulevard, seemingly never ending traffic. But, amid all the traffic there is a central pedestrian walk lined with gardens, trees, statues, fountains, seating, toilets, etc. Some of the treasured buildings of the City are to be found on either side of the boulevard.
