The area
Neighborhood: ChamberÃ
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of ChamberÃ. Humble storefronts and neighborhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.

We booked a small studio located on Calle Fuencarral. We booked with 9Flats and believe we got a great deal. We know Madrid well and thought this the best place to base ourselves despite knowing it could be a little noisy. We heard very little noise at all when in the apartment.
We were met at the apartment by a young woman who showed us how everything worked and how to get assistance if we needed it. We speak some Spanish and her English was good.
The apartment was ideal. Small – as expected – and set out ideally for self-catering. There wasn’t a thing we required that the apartment did not have. We have stayed in many apartments in Madrid and this was by far the very best. If you’re looking for luxury this isn’t it but if you’re looking for a lovely, well located apartment at a reasonable price then I doubt you’d do better.
Our friends on hearing we had booked decided to come along too. It was too late for us to cancel our apartment booking to get a larger apartment so they – against our advice – booked an apartment on Calle Infantas with Airbnb. We urged them to book with anyone other than Airbnb but the price was good and they booked it. Huge mistake! It was a hovel. Our friends were adamant that the apartment was not the one they booked – the photos on Airbnb confirmed this to us. We spent most of their first night trying to get the host or Airbnb to resolve it – neither would. The host continually said to our friends that he didn’t speak English. When we responded in Spanish he stopped replying.
In the end our friends had to book a nearby hostal – which was basic and clean. They stayed there for the remainder of our trip.
Determined not to allow Airbnb to ruin yet another holiday we went into overdrive visiting places we had all enjoyed on previous trips. It was an incredibly nostalgic few days and we were all happily exhausted by the end of it.
This was our first trip to Madrid in December and it was well worth it. We are used to bustling, noisy 24 hour Madrid – which we can enjoy. However, this was so much more relaxing and quieter. Year after year the city becomes more gentrified, losing some of the charm that we enjoy, but we’re tourists and let’s face it nothing remains the same.
Despite a shaky start with the criminal Airbnb we all had a superb time in Madrid.
Our friends did not receive any support or reimbursement from Airbnb. However, because they had paid by credit card and had photographic evidence of what Airbnb advertised, and what they arrived to, the credit card company reimbursed them.

This famous shopping street runs off Gran Via. We were staying on Gran Via so we made a few shopping expeditions here.
A large part of the street is pedestrianised and most of the shops that are clustered here are recognisable brands that cover the range of sports, clothing, handbags - Adidas, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors etc
It wasn't until we turned off onto a side street, Augusto Figueroa that I felt we’d hit the jackpot. I’d been looking for shoes and this street was lined with shoe shops.
There was an enormous range, the quality was very good and the prices made it worth seeking this street out. I bought several pairs but had my most success in a shop called rue St Honore.

The Calle de Fuencarral is a partly pedestrianised thoroughfare. It runs from Calle Gran Via in the south to Tribunal in the north. Much of the street is lined with picturesque trees and top to bottom with shops, cafés and restaurants, but mostly shops. I was actually heading up to the Museo de Historia Madrid, so didn't partake in the shopping. I did stop in one of the cafes afterwards to a light lunch.
It's a pleasant area shopping street, very busy, but not outstanding. Worth combining with Calle Gran Via if shopping is your thing.

This street is full of shops and completely pedestrianised.
Shops open till late everyday
So many shops.
You have what must be the liveliest area of this supremely fun city Malasaña on one side of the street and Chueca on the other.
These two areas must have more bars , restaurants and clubs than most countries.
Do not miss.

This is one very long pedestrianised street leading of the very Grand Gran Via.
Shops close at 9 pm and department stores and shopping centres at 10 pm seven days a week.
Madrid is in incredibly fun city.
With fantastic shopping

Long pedestrian area to wander through at leisure. Great selection of shops, from big international brands to individual designers and small companies as well as a local market in the middle. Plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to keep you going.
If you start at the top end from Tribunal or even Alonso Martinez, you reach Gran Via at the bottom, which is whole other shopping experience!

Calle De Fuencarral is besides being one of the streets of Madrid with some of the most expensive and exclusive shopping outlets on is also one of the most expensive to live on.
Architecture along the street is beautiful as you would expect from such an exclusive street, its tree lined and home to some cute cafe's and restaurants.if your planning a holiday to Madrid it's most definitely well worth checking out.

Calle de Fuencarral is a street full of value. That is it is a very expensive street to live in. In fact it is rumoured to be one of the most expensive in Madrid! It is mostly a shopping street and much of it is pedestrianised and tree-lined, which gives it some character. There are lots of well known shops in the street and some not so well known. There are expensive boutiques and some other shops which appear to be less so. We did lots of window shopping here, but no more than that! Worth a visit.

We saw a lot of the usual chain stores here...so nothing really new or especially interesting, but if you’re into a standard European shopping trip this place in Madrid will fit the bill.
